do any of you guys or girls think you've incured ear damage from seeing shows? i've never once worn ear plugs to a show.. when i was younger i thought it was kind of un-punk rock to do that.. and even now, there are times at shows when i wouldn't mind having a pair (not Frank shows, mind you) but i would never have the forthought to get them.. where do you fellow concertgoers weigh in on the earplug issue? are earplugs as lame as they look? or am i going to be deaf by the time i'm 35? everyone who rides in my car (especially my girlfriend) complains that i listen to my music WAY too loud.. am i going fucking deaf? |

Most definately, the ears are very sensitive. You won't notice what you're missing tho until it get's fairly extreme.
I *always* wear earplugs, i fund it cuts out all the hiss and everything really sounds a lot better. (And it's mixed by a guy wearing earplugs too.)
If you can't make out the vox, try earplugs, usually does the trick..
That's my experience anyway.
Just saw the Dismemberment Plan tonite, HOLY FUCK THEY'RE AMAZING LIVE. I love their albums, but this really takes the cake..wow.

I tried earplugs but found them too annoying to use during the whole show. It felt like I was listening in a phonebooth. However, I've only tried one brand. That being said, at my last show, I was glad to have them, so that I could checkout during the ultrahigh volume version of 666 and save my ears a little. |

I'm almost 18, but next time I see frank, I will have my earplugs with me. Wearing headphones when listinening music has damaged my ears enough.

Wearing earplugs is a good thing. It does make the concert sound better because you can actually hear whats going on. it also prevents the chance of you developing tinnitus. You know that lovely ringing in your ears you get after a concert. well one day it might not stop. drive you crazy, stop the sleeping. anyways check out this articule on rock concerts www.deafened.org/timestin.htm i might sound like i'm some old man complaining about loud rock and roll but you should protect your ears from damage. Never liked earplugs. Dinosaur Jr show in 92 cured me of that.

Never worn earplugs to a show or when I play with my band....but....whenever I am touring a factory with loud equipment I do. I guess it depends on what you don't want to hear. The only time I felt that my ears were beginning to hurt was during John The Revelator at the T.O show on Tuesday night. FB&C's finished with the song and it just seemed to get increasingly louder and louder!
Strummer-man I had me a vision!

the worst is when you're fucking up your ears and you don't even like the band. if i'm going to damage my ears, i at least want to do it listening to good music.
for reasons too complex to explain, i ended up at a Hayden concert recently (heard of them? hope not..) and they were sooo loud and i'm was just thinking, i can't believe i'm wasting my precious ears listening to this shit. |

I always wear earplugs. If I forget them, I roll toilet paper up and stick it in my ears. You get used to them. I forget they're in sometimes when I'm walking home afterwards.
As for it being "not punky", since when was NOT doing something because people looked down on it punk? Punks who worry about what other punks think of them are NOT punk.
Parliment fucked my right ear up during Lollapalooza. I have to turn the right channel up on my stereo amp to even things out.

TP - good idea!!
There's one place in town that will actually give you earplugs if you ask, but no such luck for most other places. |

i originally said that "when i was younger" it was "un-punk".. not "not punky".. which was kind of tongue in cheek.. and yeah, like i said, when i was younger.. which i am not now..
but thanks for the lesson in punkness..

You can easily spot the un-punk dudes by the clothes they wear. Like spiked leather jackets, band logo patches stitched everywear, dr.marten boots, spiky/colored hair. I believe they are called "fashion punks". Hehe. |

i always wear my earplugs at gigs and when i play. i actually have a pair of "musician's plugs" - musician's plugs are custom made/molded to an individual's ears and reduce the sound/decibel level across the entire frequency spectrum, so that you hear the exact same frequencies just much quieter. they're awesome - the sound is clear - it's not all muddy and muffled as is the case when using standard foam earplugs. you can usually pick them up for about $120 - $175.

I highly recommend earplugs. When I saw Frank at Stony Pony my ears were ringing for 3 days afterward. Frank says he's a little deaf because of years of playing loud music. When you see that all of The Catholics wear earplugs, you should get the picture.
I saw Superdrag last night, and they were even louder than Frank. I saw many people at the show covering their ears because the sound was so intense. I was smart enough to have the plugs, and after the show I could hear just fine. In fact I enjoyed the show more because I wasn't holding my hands over my ears.

haha im telling you, i was harrassed by my friends but i put on earplugs for frank and it just sounded better. i mean stuff sounds good loud to an extent but usually at a concert after like the opening acts your ears clog up and its all mud after that, so it was more than worth it.

It seems silly to me not to wear earplugs to a music concert or while you perform. The only way you can hear music is with your ears obviously. so why expose them to constant extreme loudness, when it could damage your hearing, the thing that allows you to hear tones in the first place. If you love music, you probably should wear earlpugs so you'll be able to listen to music when you are old and in a rocking chair.
of course, Beethoven wrote entire symphonies when he was deaf. But, I bet if our buddy Luddy were alive today, and given hearing, he'd opt to use earplugs at rock concerts. Take it from him, hearing rocks!

This raises the silly question: why does it have to be so damn loud? |

for the people in the back.
to me, the blinding, seering noise is part of the experience of a rock concert. just like getting crabs is part of sleeping with a slut. err wait, bad example ;)
seriously though, it's part of the fun. i think if you go to concerts as infrequently as i do (2-3 per year), the damage isn't as bad. if i went more frequently, i'd probably start wearing plugs. |

it's been 4 days since i saw frank and my ears are still ringing. i am going to use earlpugs from now on. You can always take them out for a spell, you know?
i think i might have done permanent damage this time.
as a musician, it fucking sucks...

Yep, it's good to always have a pair of plugs on you cause you just never know when you're going to encounter something that's the sonic equivalent of salting slugs. That noise version of Six Sixty-Six makes me feel like I'm going to have some sort of seizure and the plugs help to diminish the sensation of impending implosion. |

The last time my ears were damaged was at a FB concert sitting above Scott. Every time he hit the snare it hurt. It hurt for days ! Always have ear plugs and if you forget them use the filters from cigarettes, peel the paper off before you use them. I have been a sound engineer for many years and have lost some hearing. I never hurt anybodys ears since I know SPL from DB levels. But damage can happen even if you think everything sounds great! I ware plugs everywhere now, and if someone asks why I tell them that i'm saving my ears for rock and roll !

If you smoke them first you'll get a bit more of a buzz from the filters too.
Bit more tar in the ears too tho...yum! |
