FRANK BLACK AND THE CATHOLICS PEARL STREET, NORTHAMPTON, MA NOVEMBER 8, 2002
OPENING: THE BENNIES, DAVID LOVERING, REID PALEY
1. All the Tired Horses (tuned to, did not play with) 2. I’ve Seen Your Picture 3. Horrible Day 4. Bartholemew 5. Gouge Away 6. Hermaphroditos (with long outro) 7. Men In Black 8. Solid Gold (stopped half-way) 9. Crackity Jones 10. Thalisocracy 11. I Want Rock and Roll 12. Steak N Sabre 13. Monkey Gone To Heaven (Frank sotto voce with Dave pedal steeling) 14. There Goes Nadine 15. Whiskey In Your Shoes 16. Nimrod's Son 17. California Bound 18. Chip Away Boy 19. Jumping Beans 20. Manitoba 21. How You Went So Far 22. Heloise 23. Jane the Queen of Love 24. Bullet 25. South Bound Bevy 26. Robert Onion 27. Freedom Rock 28. Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf) 29. Black Letter Days (double time at end) 30. Black Rider (1st version)
NOTES: Someone was videotaping. Great audience, packed small club. People really dug David Lovering, for once, and the Bennies are really great, kind of like a harder Neutral Milk Hotel. Reid Paley rocked with his trio. Good to hear full band versions of the new FB songs - royal treat to hear Freedom Rock! No encore - they paused before Black Rider. They used two pedal steels, and did not stop to chat save for the Solid Gold train wreck - wherein the discussion was that they didn’t finish the song. PERSONAL NOTE: I love Pearl Street, this is where I saw FB on his 1st tour, and later with the 1st Catholics tour. This is my last review, I’m off to TFYROM! Take care yall.

I guess it's a bit redundant to review this show, since Matto already did, but it was a fun time. I brought 9 friends, some of whom were unfamiliar with Frank's solo work, but they really liked it. No encore, so that must make the guy on this board who thinks encores suck a mean dick happy. I missed not hearing Cactus or So. Bay...two songs i've never heard live that Frank seems to be playing lately. The sound quality was pretty good, a bit distorted at times. One of my friends couldn't understand how David Lovering could go from drumming for the Pixies to being a Bill Nye type guy, but all I could say to her was that people change.
Ten Percenter, in a really weird coincidence, the club played The Fall before and inbetween all the bands..
My computer monitor actually just exploded, literaly, smoke came out of it, i have no idea what happened, so unless i'm on someone else's computer (as I am now) i'm not going to be able to check out this message board anymore, which is kind of depressing.

Huh? Is this Frank, and Dave on pedal, or were both playing pedal?? =P
Itchload - bummer about the monitor.. re: the encore, they played 30 fricken' songs!!!! THIRTY!! I'll take that over 20 songs and an encore. =) |

It was Rich and Dave on pedal steel. I have to say that Frank and the Catholics weren't at their best form that night and it didn't really matter- they still ripped. Rich was out of tune a lot and Dave looked like he was nic-fitting the whole evening- but who cares? Even at their worst they are a lot better than anything else out there.
I'm seeing Dylan in Boston next weekend and then Frank in DC the weekend after- AMEN!

One very enjoyable moment during that show was during David Lovering's performance. In one part of his act, his cell phone was ringing, and he mumbled "I wonder who that could be." Someone from the crowd yelled out, "It's Kim Deal! She wants to get back together!" I thought that was hilarious.
And yeah, I noticed Dave Phillips was motioning to someone offstage to get him some cigarettes a couple of times. He looked pretty vehement at one point, like he was completely oblivious to what song they were doing... |

Hey, my roommates gone so i can use his comp.
Yes! 30 songs, I realized. I definitely wasn't complaining about length, I was still in a slight depression about my computer.
Anyway, some more thoughts on the show. UK Surf of Mutilation is played with all electric guitars...I think a slide guitar would sound perfect on this song! Also, I couldn't help noticing Frank's newly developed Jaggerisms in his way of singing it. He now sings it like "WAAA-EEEve of Mutilation"
The show was super-solid, and great. Frank seemed all business, he came out to massive applause and gave a "yeah yeah" wave to the crowd. I also noticed on the climactic parts of some songs, Frank sort of seemed through. For instance on the final scream of "i'm watching my baack!" in MIB, he kind of turned away and just concentrated on his guitar. He also did the same for the climactic "i am freeee!!" part of Freedom Rock. This is understandable though, and he did sing 90 percent of the songs perfectly. I was also surprised how intensely the band ripped through Crackity Jones and Thalassocry. The Solid Gold train-wreck was really funny, gave us some good Rich Gilbert banter.
Awesome show, 3 days later and my ears are still ringing. |

reminded of anecdote also from lovering's performance: when dave asked "does anyone know what I have here?" (the meteorite) someone yelled "pixies on 8 track!" and someone else yelled something about "4AD"..

Grieves your lucky everyone needs to see Dylan. I Live in Los Angeles I just saw him. I went to Frank Black Solo then Dylan then Paul McCartney all about one week or two weeks apart. Frank was the best (Jane was the best) but those old guys can rock. This set is sooooooo good there no bad songs and I like what he's bringing back. I think I'll listen to these songs in order now thats an order. |
