on some of frank's early solo posters, it read "death to the pixies, here's frank black". i guess they stole it from that.
im not sure why alec eiffel wasnt included. i guess its the age old "these are my favourites". everybody prefers something else.

no, it was actually the very first pixies poster.
A much slimmer Charles Thompson hung up a "Death to the Pixies" poster (1986 version, a decade before the record of that name) face-in to the wall and wrote a set list of the songs he wanted to cover on the back.
It was shocking to some because his thumbs down sign kinda looks like it could be his...err..umm...yeah...look and you'll see what I mean...

That was my favorite T-shirt. Got it during the Bossanova tour at the Ritz. Althought the picture wasn't as defined as in the poster. I picked up a new copy of the t-shirt again just last year in the Village.

The word "pixies" sans "the" works fine on an album cover, but when used in other contexts it sounds a bit awkward and annoying. I suspect that might be why. Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever noticed if the band members refer to themselves as "the" pixies in interviews, etc? I've never noticed, and when you drop the word in ordinary speech, it's pretty noticeable (and irritating), so I'd think I would have noticed. Also just out of curiosity, is it just me, or does it seem like the sticklers about dropping "the" are usually the late converts rather than old fans? I don't recall people doing that, or quibbling about it, back in the day. |

I had always assumed it was "the pixies".....usually when a band is named after a plural noun, the "the" is kind of a given

aah, yes, but if you look at old reviews, people like the NME made a point of how there wasn't even a friendly 'the' at the beginning of the name, so they must have made a point of it sometime.

These bands are sometimes are referred to with "The" preceding the name but it does not appear on their albums (at least, their first album.. I've come across bands where it was just simply their name and then "the" appears on later albums).. Ramones, Talking Heads, Candy Butchers, Eels, and Violent Femmes

What do you mean Mun Chien? Are you suggesting that Gollum isn't real??!
marcusb, you could add Throwing Muses to your list... although I don't think anyone ever calls them "the Throwing Muses"... it just sounds wrong.
This early poster suggests they used to call themselves "The Pixies" but then, maybe they had nothing to do with the poster itself, who knows.
The dropping of the definite article might be v23's doing for all we know?

Gollum is my favourite character of LOTR, isn't there a double dvd release entirely devoted to gollum? I would like to see it...

I wish I had that t-shirt. I would wear it to the same places I would wear my Big Black "Songs About Fucking" t-shirt.
By "pulling", bumblebeeboy, do you mean "fucking"? <nudge, nudge, wink wink!>

Just type Death To The Pixies T-shirt into google and you will find loads of sites where you can get it. There are so many great t-shirt sites in the net, I buy most of mine online now. Too many in fact, I'm becoming obsessed. |

Shoot, I guess I was hopin' for a link to a reputable site, vs. the likes of everythingenglish.com etc., but thanks just the same. I would like some of my money to go to the band in the form of royalties, if at all possible (I know, very idealistic of me). As it happens, I am already well-versed in the ways of praying to google. :)
