Today's random song of the day is Fiddle Riddle
What do you think of it?
lyrics[ Once stood a man on my face Ooh yeah, on my face Gobbled him up ''cause my taste Leaves nothing to waste
Hear the riddle that I say
What is fair is fair That is fair and square to me
Piano it marks the good pace Ooh yeah, the good pace Don''t know if it''s right, but I like the bass So turn up the bass
Hear the fiddles as they play
What is fair is fair And the guitar player
No metal, no brick, was no trace Oh, no, was no trace But machines moved on and still chased No particular place
Hear the riddle that I say
What is fair is fair That is fair and square to me

Ohh and the 'But machines moved on'-part sound really spooky/ with that high note on the synth

Looks like the "song of the day" doesn't include b-sides. I wish it did. Fiddle Riddle: great song on TOTY, amazing in concert, country-style.

Great song. One of the 10 or 12 highlights of TOTY... |

yes the theory was floated and confirmed in an online chat by FB I believe. The man on the face was mankind, the face was the earth. Essentially an extinction of man song. Only machines were left on earth.
Someone can clean this up for me I'm sure. |

I've always looked at this as a good song among the many fantastic songs on this great album. I must confess I've never fully appreciated the 'middle chunk' of this album (from 'Freedom Rock' through 'Fazer Eyes') as much as the other tracks.

Great song, best bass-line on TOTY. I used to play bari sax, so I always hear the bass over the melody when I listen to music, and this is an awesome bass-line. |

I strangely agree El Barto. It's not a bad song, but it just is plain out of place and...it reminds me of a glazed donut...too sweet and hurts my teeth. I would however love to hear this touted live country version. Maybe that'll change me! By the way, El Barto...still looking for my COR import...my place is a shambles!

Thanks for backing me up bRIAN. It's definitely out of place, but I can't say the same about glazed donuts. Don't stress about finding it; take your time!

I've read so many reviews of this record where they trashed this song in particular. I think it's such an awesome tune. It's got a nice dubby feel to it. |

Good song overall, but out of place. ...Who knows how much weed Frank has smoked when writing this one.
Nice bass part, cheesy keyboard strings, fun piano solo at 1:49, nice effect on drums around 2:15, great humming with the keyboard at 2:42, cool guitar part at the very end.
...though he loved to rock and roll...

the middle part of the album is clearly about his screaming queen friends.

The token reggae song. Not a classic, but I imagine most musically-inclined listeners get a kick out of both the jokey musical elements and lyrics like "don't know if it's right but I like the bass". |

it's an interesting song....excellent backing vocals. But why does song oracle make so many 'random' songs of the day from Teenager of the Year? And where's the SMYT songs? |

The confusion has been cleared up.... I misheard the lyrics on this one... I always believed that Frank was singing about the mythical cyclops:
Once sat a man on my face Oh yeah, on my face...
With the trumpet sound emphasizing the feeling that a cyclops was at large. Now I know this is not true and that Frank has never had a experience the trauma of a read admiral.
Who's the man that won't cop out when there's danger all about? |

When I bought TOTY, I always used to skip "Fiddle Riddle", I didn't like the song very much...
After a while I began to really like it - I especially like when FB makes comments on his own music (like "I like the bass", or in "Freedom Rock", or the intro of "Czar", or in "Bullet"...)

Yes, but there is a big big difference between this and "No woman no cry", you must admit. This is like an mad scientist in his crazy lab trying to obtain gold by mixing other metals. In the beginning, you say "wait, that is not gold", but then you look at the experience and not at the result and then it becomes interesting.

I'll probably say this a million times.....but I love the scifi types of topics that Frank chooses to write songs about. This song has a real "Terminator" type of feel to it, BUT DONE REGGAE STYLE!
Does anyone know if Frank reads a lot of scifi....and which authors in particular? There have been several elements that reminded me of specific books. This song reminds me of Gregory Benford's Galactic Center series of books. Its a little bit of a loose association, but the books tell the tale of a remnant of humanity that live almost like cockroaches scavenging and hiding from a society of machines. The machines have almost a hive mind mentality. The machines aren't exactly hunting for the humans.....more like how you would react to finding a bug in your house. Still a lethal encounter for the humans.
I also love that Frank doesn't come out and tell you what the song is about. Like with Czar, there are enough clues there to figure it out...but its subtle. "Hear the riddle that I say..."
