I was born and raised here. And now Frank lives here, what is up with that? Wanted to be closer to the WOW Hall? Glad you are here though, maybe you will play more often at Berbatis then. Perhaps special, solo acoustic shows. -Sean. |

Oh, about your question. Frank's just following every step of Elliott Smith.

hopefully not EVERY step. I'd hate to see Frank take a knife to the chest! |

I spent 1 week in Portland in August '98, it's a real cool place to stay. The city itself looks like many other US cities, but its atmosphere is really warm and friendly. I remember that every time we got lost (at least 3 times a day), somebody spontaneously came up to help us - I had experienced the famous western friendliness before, but never to this degree. The Japanese Gardens are wonderful, and Powell's - the world's biggest brick-and-mortar bookshop - is definitely a must-see-again-and-again. Furthermore the city is ideally placed between the Cascade Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, the Columbia Gorge and Crater Lake, Seattle and San Francisco...
Uh, it's just to say that IMHO Frank was absolutely right to move to Portland. BTW, it seems that his new girfriend lives not too far from there, in Eugene...

I spent some time in Oregon myownself and it was splendid except for the fact that they pump your gas for you out there. I hear they do it in New Jersey, too, but I ain't tryin' to gain first hand knowledge of that. Oregon is #2 on my places to live list with #1 being the Louisville area. |

Just curious, why Louisville? Personal reasons, or is there something special about the area? |

I lived and worked at a temp job for 6 months in Longview, WA and would head south about an hour to recreate in Portland. I thought it was a cool city, but I have never been rained on so much. Seemed like they had two seasons: dry and really wet/grey. Rained for 30 days straight, and then I left. Talked to a friend in Oregon later that Winter--90 days or so with rain every day. I guess if you're used to it, no problem. Big change from SoCal. |

Louisville kicks a**, but that's probably a biased opinion. Mostly. I am curious why you would say so, too Owen... |

Are you saying there aren't full serve gas stations where you live? Weird. Here there are full serve and self serve, and sometimes the self serve is a lil' cheaper. I've even heard that some people tip "gas attendants" on really cold days. Crazy! Speaking of tipping, that gives me an idea for topic.... |

I have family in Floyd's Knobs, IN. Not much goin' on there. But from what I've seen of Louisville and Louisvillians, I like it. It's the right size, good weather, almost as basketball crazy as my home state of NC, good music. So not much other than the cool vibe I get from Louisville.
Oregon's the only place I've been to that has mandatory full-service fillin' stations. And I don't think you can tip them. And you sure can't refuse their service from what I understand. I don't know -- maybe the pumps have retina scanners or seomthing. You can still find optional full-service places if you look hard enough around here, but they're an endangered species. |

So all the stations in Oregan have to be full serve? Crazy. How... un-American. |

I believe it's some kind of social welfare program. So yeah, un-American. You pay more for gas. That cashflow goes to help support folks (the pumpers) who otherwise might not have a liveable income. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. Of course, that someone will hafta bargain with my message board wrath, but that's a small price to pay for being right. |

That would suck to have such a mad illin' car as Frank's got and not even get to fill it up yourself.
Louisville also has a crazy big free skate park, and the X Games people love it apparently. I love the Ohio River, KY in general (it's in my blood), the awful awful (so bad it's funny) architecture, the big city/small town vibe, and the great music culture.
This has been discussed before, I think, but doesn't Portland also have the largest number of strip clubs per capita in the USA? |
