Well as you all know Mr. Thompson usualy favors lyrics that make you think or involve very intresting or disturbing topics (I.E: UFOs AKA: Manta Rays, Incest, Men wearing Eye Liner) so I thought it would be nice to talk about some lyrics that really dont make sence and why Frank wrote them. Of course you can visit Alec Eiffel (The Not So French Pixies Page) to find out information witch is a good place to start in the "Titles" section. I will say that one of the most intresting songs that always made me think about why he wrote it was "Tonys Theme", On Alec Eiffel it is said to possibly be about his roommate and some say its about a comic book hero but I could never figure it out. Please share your thoughts.

Ok, Come on here people lets try to get this thread rolling here. Idiots. I think its probaly one of the most intresting topics regarding the pixies for the fact that alot of their songs really make no sence at first glance, But their songs really need to be pullen apart and most of them have some sort of strange storie behind them.

I think the reason you haven't had much response is that ALL of their songs are pretty mysterious.....that's why I haven't been able to respond anyway.

I always thought "I was talkin' to peachy-peach about kissy-kiss" was pretty f-ed up! I have no idea what that glorious bastard is talking about 90% of the time, and therein lies the appeals of the Pixies (I think). Just so goddamn weird and magnificent.... |

it is very nice because most of the time, you can interpret their songs in as many ways as you want.

A bossanova is also a particular drum beat, I think. A lot of the songs are mysterious, but a lot are really obvious. I like to pick the simpler ones apart, like this:
"The creature in the sky, got sucked in a hole, now there's a hole in the sky, and the grounds not cold, and if the grounds not cold, everything is gonna burn, we'll all take turns, I'll get mine too." Here it's pretty obvious he's saying that if we get rid of God, we're all going to Hell.
"Dead" is obvious if you're Christian of any type. Bassically the story of Bathsheba. She's married to Uriah, but having an affair with David. So David puts Uriah on the front line to die. Something like that any way. I don't know if she was pregnant or anything though, as the bridge would suggest.
I also think the Mr. Grieves is about trying to see the good, not the bad, or something like that. I don't know who Mr. Grieves is though, so that could change a lot.
I often think too, that he doesn't even know what every lyric means. I bet he often puts something irrelavent, to make it sound better. What I'm saying is, I'm not sure there is as much depth to every song as we think; although he is an extremely good song writer.

About Monkey Gone To Heaven (refering to iluvblackfrancis's post), I heard somewhere that FB was frustrated by huge rubbish dumps located 100 miles from New Jersey. There were tons of dirty oil in the water and sailors took fishes in bad health. Sounds like his frustration finds expression in writing a green hymn involving man, devil and god. Let's be more specific : the creature and hole he speaks about, can't it be about that ozone stuff ("The creature in the sky / Got sucked in a hole") ? No ozone and the sun warms up the earth so because "now there's a hole in the sky", so "the grounds not cold ... everything is gonna burn". So what ? Don't you think that environment point of view could be an alternative to this God thing (and I swear I don't mention this cos I'm an atheist ...). Me, don't know, sounds interesting to me, but I can't remember if people cared so much about the ozone problem in the late 80s, when the song was written. Anyone heard about this too ?

Bossa Nova, which roughly translates as "new thing", "new bump or "new beat", is a type of music from Brazil, a sot of weird mixture of smooth jazz and traditional Brazilian rhythms of samba. It originated in Rio de Janeiro in the late 50's through the music of Antonio Carlos (Tom) Jobim, the lyrics of Brazilian beat poet Vinicius de Moraes and the revolutionary guitar playing style and super hushed singing of Joao Gilberto, known today as "O Mito" in Brazil, which means "the Myth".
Joao Gilberto (ex-husband on Astrud Gilberto and father of Bebel)is still alive and tours(very)occasionally...his most famous song in Brazil is perhaps "Chega de saudade" (no more blues), though the most famous worldwide is no doubt "A garota de(the girl from)Ipanema". Whether Black Francis is a big fan is another matter. When he says "Every moment and every day, I'll bossanova with you", you hear a sort of latin beat and a little guitar solo that start...I really don't know what that song is about, though I love the imagery. |

Thank you cult of caribou - I always liked Joao and Astrud Gilberto, but I didn't know any of the history. Very cool.

I want to add more to what I said. I also don't think we should worry too much what Frank was meaning by it, but we should take in our own meanings. All good poets should know that art has many perceptions, infinite, even.
Monkey Gone To Heaven could be about the dump thing, it would explain the "Got killed by ten million pounds of sludge from New York and New Jersey." I find it very likely that it is just that line refering to that, though. Frank Black is Catholic, right?
