I have read many times [including the sleeve credit on St.Francis Dam Disaster] that "sleep" performed by FB+C on S.S.M.V.G.D. is supposedly a cover of the 1973 Donovan song.. Having recently tracked down a Donovan sleep on CD, I am suspicious that it is the same song, having alt lyrics, etc.

Does anybody know whether I'm listening to the right song or not? where exactly is the correct Donovan version to be found?

I thought that it was on the Donovan album "Sutras," which is one of his relatively more recent albums. Happy hunting.

[Edit: Yep, I've confirmed it. 1998 release date. Definitely the same song.]

Don't understand.
Donovan has a song called "Sleep" that is track 3 on the studio album Cosmic Wheels. Cosmic Wheels was released in 1973. He also has a song called "Sleep" that is track 3 on the studio album Sutras. Sutras was released in 1996.

Interestingly, track 3 on Sutras is not a remake of track 3 on Cosmic Wheels. They are two different songs. They each have different lyrics and different music. Unless I have gone completely deaf, I am pretty sure of this.

I do not believe that Cosmic Wheels was ever released on compact disc. I am positive that Sutras was released on compact disc. Therefore, if Frank Black's cover of the song "Sleep" does not sound like the song "Sleep" that Larry Norman Jr. has listened to on a CD, it is probably because Frank Black did a cover of Donovan's OTHER SONG OF WHICH THE TITLE IS "SLEEP".

Mere, you have THOROUGHLY confused me.

It's Sleep off of Sutras.

Yeah, that's what I said. When I said "same song" I meant it's the same song that Frank covered! I don't know nuthin' 'bout no other Donovan song by the name of sleep. Go to amazon.com and you can listen to a little sample of it off of Sutras.
