I would like to visit Boston for no other reason than because it was the Pixies hometown (city). Has anyone ever been, or better still is anyone actually from there or does anyone live there now?

I just wondered if the place is worth visiting and do you get any sense of a Pixies influence there. Obviously I don't expect there are any monuments named after them or any carnivals or parades in their honour but I was just wondering if it had any more of a Pixies feel to it than any other city in the world. I for example am from and live in Manchester, music's second city (New York being the first), and you definately get a feel for the bands that come out of here (and I'm not talking about Simply Red, Take That or M People here) if you spend time in the right places. It's a long shot but I just thought I'd ask.

I came here expecting a discussion on Tom Scholz' hard rock band of the 1970s whose drummer sported, arguably, the greatest white afro in mainstream American music. Imagine my disappointment.

To me, Boston doesn't really have any sort of Pixies feel. It has a fun museum of science, a large (but kinda beat up) aquarium, a handful of good indian food places (the stuffed naan at Bombay Gardens is great), and some good rock clubs, especially over in Cambridge. They just feel like normal dirty rock clubs.

Ramona and I live in Boston. I actually live in Cambridge about 5 minutes away from The Middle East. I love it here. I've lived in Manhattan and prefer Boston. It has a good balance of big city convenience and small town vibe and beauty. The college kids can get annoying, but it's a great town for music of all sorts. Nothing beats running next to the Charles.

My Aunt and 2 cousins live in Cambridge so I have been to Boston a couple times and I like it alot. Kind of wish I could go back soon since I haven't been there in about 4 years.

Manchester is music's second city? Really? I couldn't name a single band out of Manchester. How about Nashville or Detroit as music cities? Or Austin more recently?

Boston of course has a lot of history to offer, a great baseball stadium, and many bookstores.

Joy Division
New Order
The Stone Roses
Oasis
The Smiths
The Buzzcocks
Happy Mondays

...........to name some. Joy Division and The Smiths in particular are two of the most influential bands of all time, wherever you are from. Must admit that I have no idea who has come out of Nashville and Austin but Detroit is number 3 in my opinion. New York is undoubtedly number one though, even though I don't like the city. I actually don't like a lot of the bands that come out of Manchester but they have been very influential on the whole.

I will happily discuss 'More Than A Feeling' with you as it's one of my favourite songs of all time, and I'm in no way ashamed to admit that.

That is an impressive list, even though none of those bands are personal favorites of mine. Much of country music has come out of Nashville. For jazz one has to include New Orleans, Kansas City, and Chicago. For the blues one should include Memphis and Chicago.

I guess if I had the choice to spend a week somewhere listening to local music it would be Austin or New Orleans.

Oh yeah there are certainly more. The Fall have also been a hugely influential band and The Chameleons are from my home town of Middleton

I never knew that either. Not that you prefer that version but that they had done a version at all. I must track it down.

yeah, its very different....it kind of fluctuates between speedcore style verses and a slow, sludgey chorus.....not for Boston purists, but I like it

and I think threads like this are good evidence that that Stitches guy wasn't all bad. I've looked at a few of Swimmer's old posts and he seemd to start fights with everyone at some point or another

I live a few minutes away from Boston and would gladly trade places with you for a week as Manchester gave birth to The Fall and Joy Division, two of my top 5 greatest bands EVER TO EXIST.

not to start an argument (we've seen what happens when people argue on this board), but what exactly is an "itchload"? is it more than a shitload?

Ah, my dear Boston. Never have I been to a city with such a concentration of grumpy assholes per square mile. It's a nice place to visit, but you really don't want to live there...

Please... Try living around Chelsea in NYC.

It depends where you're visiting. Are you near a college campus, particularly a college that isn't Harvard or MIT? Are you outside the Fleetcenter after a Bruins game? Are you in southie?

Yeah we could be like exchange students. I'll leave you a list of all the cool places to go and you could do the same for me.

I think everyone should arrange this with someone on here.

Ha, I don't know actually. Maybe it is just a shitload...actually it comes from a botched attempt at pig latin when I was younger to say shitload, so you're not far off.
