Hey, Since we all seem to be Frank Black fans (or else why the hell would you be here?) I thought it would be intresting to learn each others least favorite and most favorite bands, Sine we all could possibly have the same musical intrests or maybe the exact oppisites. Ok, Ok, Ok I know this has been done before, The rules are that Frank Black can't appear anywhere in your list however The Pixies can but as for "Frank Black & The Catholics" or "Frank Black & The Teenage Fan Club" that is not welcome because he should be expected to be one of your favorite already, So let me try to start this topic off with my top 3 least favorite and by "Least Favorite" I mean you would rather have your eyes gouged out and shoved up your ass then listen to them, And Top 3 Most favorite and by that I mean you would actualy go out and spend money on their albums. Oh yeah and if the man himself reads this (AKA: Mr. Thompson) I would appreciate it if he would tell us his 3 hated bands.

Least Favort
1) Linken Park
(Horrible Lyrics, Horrible Music, Horrible Image)
2) Eminem
(Not a muscician)
3) Any whiney teenage music with a stupid whiney singer
(Also known as pretty much any music played on MTV, I think theres a man by the name of "John Myer" or something that sings this music.

Top 3 Most Favorite
1) The Pixies
(I preffer The Pixies over Frank Black even thow Frank Black features alot better music, But who can say a bad thing about Joey Santiago and everyones favorite scientist working together with Kim Deal and Mr.T, By the way when I say Mr. T I'm not talking about a strange black man that wears jewlery and can be seen in a strange black van)
2) Red Hot Chilli Peppers
(I most admit I really do favore Indie music but once in a while I listen to them)
3) The Breeders
(Ok, Ok, Ok... The Breeders arent solid gold but once in a while they have some pretty catchy tunes and I will always stay true the orginal Pixies, But I think they spend more time in prison or getting stoned then they do making records.)

Well thats the best I can do but my over all favorite would be Frank Black thats why my musical diet consists of. Oh yeah by the way a few other bands I listen to are CKY, Foo fighters, also Liam Lynch did a strange song almost parodying the pixies called "Collien" witch is pretty cool. You hear it at first and wonder what the hell is going on but when he pops off the first few lines like "Ce, Senirotie" and the strange vibe the song screams out you think "Hey, This is kinda a pixies song".

I can only narrow my likes to 2 bands.
Rocket from the Crypt & Frank Black

My dislikes right now is definitely Corey Feldman, for some odd reason.

Well, if her "last name" is 'Keyes', then perhaps... :) She's at least got a piano reference in her name.

OK, I suppose I should do this. Since we're not allowed to choose FB, and since I'm not going to put Pixies on there because pretty much that makes this a top 2 list:

1) Spoon
2) Ween
3) New Pornographers

Least Favourite:
1) I hate so many pop bands equally it's enough to fill several pages. Or at least 3 spots.

CoF, I've listened to both Ween and Spoon (I'm actually listening to Kill the Moonlight now). Are the New Pornographers just as good? I really like Spoon and from what I've heard of Ween, they're pretty cool. Think I should check out the New Pornographers? If so, what album?

Well, the New Pornographers are very good, but I have to admit that I did rank them third of those three for a reason. They're much more poppy than either Ween or Spoon, very sugary sweet. Probably, of all Ween's and Spoon's albums, closest to Girls Can Tell, though quite a bit different. I hesitate to use the term, but it borders brit-pop a little. It is good, though.

I would definitely check them out, The Electric Version (their second album) in particular. Very accessible (some songs more than others) and fun. I was thinking of hosting a Spoon or NP song for the Music Ring, maybe I will...

likes in no particular order (because that is too hard to do)
Pixies
Modest Mouse
Frank Black

if this list is without Pixies and Mr Black then i guess it would be
1. Modest Mouse
2. Smoking Popes
3. Guided By Voices (would be 2 but i really only like 3 of their albums)

dislikes
Limp Bizkit
anything metal (Korn, Slipknot, and that kind of crap)
Dave Matthews band and the rest of that same sounding college girl music

and now i'm living in the cold but i'm looking for the sign

Music that has passed the test of time is from an artist named
"Ulrich Schnauss"

Electronic music, shoegazin', refreshing, reminds you of an optimistic future, blah. Seriously, try to find a copy and listen to it a few times. It's unbelievably Addicting...

I found it on soul seek after someone was raving about him at the BBC 6. I don't give a crap about electronic music but his stuff is very tasty.

Man, seems as though some of you guys don't really give anything a chance unless it's some alt-rock indie stuff. If someone has never even heard Tori Amos before, how do they know that they would like her or not, just based on her status as a top-selling performer? (Not saying that I think Tori Amos is that great, just as example.) This probably has been asked before, but what would we all do if FB went top 40? Played videos on MTV all the time? If the music didn't suffer, then why would we care?

There's some popular music I like okay.

Glacial, this has nothing to do with her status or how many sales. I just plain don't like her as a person. I can only jokingly comment on hating her music.

Same as I don't really care if FB was in the top 40, but I'd have to wonder how he got there since the majority of the people on those lists is a sellout and I don't like to support the commercialization or 'business side' as floop puts it, of music. But if I still thought he was making music for the sake of expression/art/himself, then I would still enjoy him. Much as I enjoy the White Stripes.

I'm not making any lists, but about 75% of the time these days I'm listening to either pixies or TMBG (the clock radio is so convenient) the rest are just tons of bands I like but never liked a whole lot. Would this "Piano Slut" be Regina Spektor? Because she is hilariously bad, but not offensively bad

ObfuscateByWill, Shudder to Think was a great band, especially during the Pony Express days. That is another album that hasn't gotten old because it's so innovative and hardly immitated.

I'm not sure about Craig's new band "Baby". It's too gay for me.

I don't always look at being successful in music or art as "selling out" because that's what most people in life are out there trying to accomplish, making money doing what they love. (There are, however, some people who do it solely to make money, unfortunately, while the quality of their music greatly suffers, which I'm sure is what you are referring to...) I don't really believe that the simple, stripped-down issue of the artist making money from their creation is wrong. You mentioned not believing in the "business side" of the music, but if you are going to market to a broad audience it just has to be this way. I think it gets fucked up when the record label executives come in, and/or all the "middle men" who get paid inordinate amounts of money that force the price of the band's CD up.

wow..never knew piano slut could hold so much appeal...
well i still can't remember her name - but she's the one who had that video last year which is just her playing this piano driving round - well obviously not driving, but ya know...
oh, and she played on the counting crows song that was one of the worst songs ever written....ahh the memories!

oh, it's all coming back to me now...her name is: Vanessa Carlton

and she just rubs me the wrong way - not even in a good way....

Good to see another Shudder fan, Kirk.

Baby is certainly a different direction.

Seems natural for him, though.

-

I've been on an S2T binge recently. Made a 'Best Of' disc for the car.

The guys I carpool with aren't really digging Craig's voice at all.

-

What do you think of Nate Larson's solo work? I bought Jealous God, but could only listen to a couple of the tracks in there without wincing. I guess I was expecting another Mind Science of the Mind album.

1) Pixies
2) M83
3) Low
Of all time:
1) Pixies
2) Wildhearts
3) Radiohead

Worst:
1) Busted (aargh!)
2) Linkin Park (what's the point?!)
3) Blue

Currently,

1) Pixies
2) Flaming Lips
3) Porcupine Tree

Least favorites:

1) Train-- based solely on the song that is still played constantly on pop radio.
2) Nearly all rap.
3) Songs with the "growl style vocals" They don't do a thing for me.
