Today's random song of the day is Robert Onion.

What do you think of it?

lyrics
Robert leads me into thought
Onion layers wait for you
Bounty of eternal fields
Every muscle knot I feel
Robert tell me what to do
Tell exactly what you''re not, yeah

Tails pushing grand whales
Heads hope to have the stuff
Each flag had no sail

Can you believe enough?
And though Diana calls to you
She will never never yield
Every siren has her spot

Four hundred million
Oh that was very far
Robert sweet Onion

Makes me feel so tired
Another layer and layers and layer, oh no
Robert can you find your way?
Show me the way to come

Zugzwang got me in a way
Under my opposing thumb
Brandishing my shield
Robert leads me into thought
Into the dimming blue
Nowhere in this world

For this old Jack-Tar
Three cheers for Robert
To the cinnabar
One ponders

Layers and

Robert

This song is the epitome of Frank Black... a little of the sci-fi hidden beneath an abstract plain of lyrics, lyrical hints like the acrostic, not to mention the fantastic music. I love... LOVE this one live too, especially if Eric (I don't care for what Rich does, except for towards the end of the song when he plays those staggered chords really quickly and then moves to the organ for the outro) is on the keys. A highlight off an album that itself is a highlight of Frank's career.

The music in this song always reminds me of another song and I can't remember what it is... if I think of it I'll edit it this.

The chord structure is somewhat similar to Hangwire though I think... but obviously a completely different rythym.

I believe it was Thomas who figured out the 4, 3, 2, 1, blast off thing first... if I remember correctly.

This song possesses the complexity, odd time signature, interestingly original musical passages by each instrument, abstract lyrics, and great melody. To hear this song pleases me, as it is one of my very favouourites. I believe that if this song had been executed in the "spacious, reverb-heavy production"* of Bossanova, it would have sounded great on that album and been a classic Pixies song. Proof that FB's songs don't pale in comparison with the old band, despite popular belief of critics.

LBF, you're right, is it pretty similar to Hangwire. haha, I actually thought about combining the two into the cover I did when I accidentally played the wrong chord and realized it was Robert Onion...it didn't work, though, haha.

I love the song, though. Great vocals.

I must admit that after a period when I found FB's music a little disappointing (that is, after TCOR), I knew that a new album (DITS) was coming and before I could buy it I heard "Robert Onion" on a French radio, and when I heard just the opening guitar riff, I knew that his majesty Frank Black was back !
