cult of ray is a fantastic album; one of the most brilliantly recorded pieces of work that i have ever heard. the songs are brisk, tight, played with precision and executed perfectly. go back and listen a few more times. it's definitely one of the best.

They did an excellent job on COR yes, however, some people (the Swimmer, yellow racist*), not me, would rather listen to the sound of excriment being expelled from the turd haver, amped with an ultra-powered sensitive microphone and turned up to ten.

[see topic in general chat "either or: srg. pepper's versus Cult of Ray"]

I'd rather hear the Marsist, Men in Black, Shazeb, Jesus was Right... anything.

I mean come on.

Jesus was Right should be the Swimmer's theme song. I can't wait to hear him bash me in his retort. My theme song will probalby end up being Saved by the Bell.

Its funny I caught this cause this cd gets shreaded every time I check the on this site just reading how someone who never even heard this cd of 13 classic songs thought it was one of FB weakest efforts. I like Kicked in the Taco and You ain't me and the title track. This Cd was what set the tone of what was to follow 2 track recording.

I'm not really "album by album"

I'd say I am song for song...

Cult of Ray is one of my favorite Frank Black albums. It's an amazing rock album. Sometimes I think fans don't like it because it came after Teenager. Perhaps FB & the C's or Pistolero would've ended up with the same response if either had been solo album number three.

Whenever I'm in the mood for something rocking, I throw it in. The Last Stand... is the perfect conclusion; with that guitar solo that so matches the lyrics; the feeling of ascension at the end of a song about a horrible tragedy.

All the guitar solos have this wild energy to them. It's a freakin' shame that the title song has never been played in concert. What a great album.

good songs, not a very cohesive album, though...after his first 2 albums which contained almost no filler and was listenable start to finish without much jarring, COR is kinda all over the place.

marsist, men in black...oh yeah, great start, great songs

punk rock city, you aint me...hmmm, that first one's about 1-2 albums before its time, you aint me is excellent..but then we get into...

jesus was right into i dont wanna hurt you...that's a sharp turn into a dark alley of gooey syrup....

mosh dont pass, kicked in the taco...mosh is back where we started on the album before we get into a lyrical b-side quality kicked in taco...

creature crawling, adventure/resolution...creature is great, takes the edge off the oddly jarring kicked in the taco, ad/res is one of his best instrumentals...but then...

dance war...one of the most oddly wimpy aggro songs ive ever heard

cult of ray...typical frank, it works

last stand...great way to close an album, but not this album

all in all, there's some great songs there, but as far as the order of the songs and some of the songs that made the final album cut...its a bit too much of a extensive reach for only 41 minutes of listening no matter how well played it all is. that's just the opinion of me and some of my friends...flame away...heh

In my opinion about half of COR is good. The other half is very average.

"Jesus Was Right" has to be one of the most bland, mediocre songs I've ever heard (by an artist that I like)

COR was the album that almost made me forget about FB. I bought it the day it came out, played it once or twice. That was it for about 2 years. I picked it up again to take a listen 'cause I was still listening to TOTY in my car all the time and I wanted something new from him to listen to. So in 1998 COR was still pretty new to me. I was trying to dig it, got a liking from a few of the songs, but it just felt so much like a Blue Oyster Cult album to me. Lots of filler. Three or four good songs does not make for a great listen straight through. So I enlisted the aid of the Internet for some help. Low and behold, after a little finger tapping, I was rewarded with a new album release date for Frank Black and the Catholics (had to be the same guy right?). I go to the record store on the release date and ask counter dude. "Do you have the new Frank Black 'cause it is due out today?" His reply was, "no sorry". Ouch, I should have known. Then he says, "I do have something in the Import section from him". He points it out to me and sure enough it's the Europe version. Fuck me I could have had this thing for months probably. Life was good, I now had new hope for my favorite artist.

What if you could take away two or three of the weak songs (your choice) and add Announcement. Would that have saved it?

"Dance war", "Jesus was right", "Punk Rock City" and "I don't wanna hurt you" are pretty bad, as compared to some other songs on the album, like "Kicked in the taco" or "Shazeb". I agree that it was really difficult to come after a masterpiece such as TOTY, but COR is not the worst album for me, the worst is definitely Pistolero. However, good moments on each of these records are so much better than most of the today's music...

You guys seriously have a problem if you bring up people's names in posts that don't even post in. Obviously you have some sort of obsession or sickness which has been well established in these forums.

But I would suggest unless there is a direct conversation or post you don't bring up my fucking name. Also, I don't find it at all funny to say Yellow racist. It's not funny, it doesn't make any sense and I don't like the word racist used anywhere around describing me. Now if you have a problem with that, I suggest you email me off posts but until then, fucking stop it you sick piece of shit.

I don't know why everyone dislikes "Jesus was right" so much.. I think it's a good song with a killer finish. COR is not my favorite FB album, but I do really like the guitar work and overall sound. It's very upbeat and rockin, perhaps more so in some ways than any other record he's made (I'm thinking of the feeling I get when I hear you ain't me, jesus, or the beginning of the marsist. oh yeah and the 'message of love' bit at the end of taco). I think people who like this record would love Lou Reed's Rock and Roll Animal (live record) or maybe the obscure stuff Iggy did in the early eighties that is actually really f***in good (Loco Mosquito, Five Foot One, etc). We all know how these guys have inspired FB and if you're reading Frank ... you've surpassed both of them, in my own opinion (as a songwriter and musician, I mean. as a raw performer, no one can EVER touch Iggy, as i'm sure you'll agree).
