speaking of people who don't know what the hell they are talking aboOt...these f*ckers suck at forming an opinion....

sorry...i just really hated the new sloan, and everyone seems to be saying its their best album... it doesn't even sound like sloan...it sounds like some over-produced, polished up wad of shite
compared to any other sloan album, i mean even the album prior to this one didn't suck as much....but it did still suck....any other sloan fans.... let me know your idears...

I've never really been able to get right into Sloan, but I like the early stuff. I think they kind of peaked with One Chord to Another, and it's been getting progressively weaker ever since. My biggest complaint about the band is that I find them quite boring live.

Nothing is ever something.

Never listened to Sloan. Too many bands out there. Or not enough. All music is a site I visit often, mostly to read about the history of bands and find similar artists to ones I like (though the term "similar artists" is often quite loose), and I usually read the reviews and trust that the album with the best rating (with the check next to it) would be a good starting point for me, though I don't base my every music purchase on this website. And I don't let their opinion affect how I like the album, though somtimes I wish I would stay away from reviews and critics altogether and just formulate my own feelings for the music without that critics opinion lurking in my subconcious.

I find most of their reviews to be pretty spot-on. At least they give the responsibility of each review to someone likely to give it a fair assessment. But when all is said and done, a review is just an opinion and you know what they say about opinions...

I like allmusic simply because it's kind of a personal overview of a whole band...you don't usually see one source or magazine review every album by a band. The one thing they are very good at is awarding 5 star albums, they seem to know culturally when an album is considered a classic by those who own it, rarely will they give an album 5 stars that doesn't deserve it (only with the Beatles have they done this).

Yeah, but they gave Faith No More's King For A Day album 2 stars. That makes me mad, mad, mad. If they're right then I've got a 2 star album in my all time top 5.

Then I read that Starsailor's album gets 4 fucking stars! It's bloody awful imho.

yah i have almost all of sloans albums and i heard some songs off the new one and it just seemed pretty disappointing, so it is pretty strange that allmusic rated it so highly

For the most part I can understand their point of view, and a lot of reviews I agree with. MOst of the forum members gave good points in this thread; I agree with Itchload and (especially) Robeta Onion. But one thing that I cannot stand is them giving Dead Milkmen's "Not Richard, But Dick" 1.5 stars? How can they possibly give an album with "I Started to Hate You" 1.5 stars. I man, they're entitled to their own opinion as reviewers, but I don't even think they even really listened to that album. And read the Goat's Head Soup review...unless I'm the stupidest man alive*, one sentence in particular makes absolutely no sense.
*We can consummately rule out the possibility of this due to the existence of Dean Katsiris. (that was a joke)
