I don't know what kind of rap following we have here at the forum. I imagine that those who do like rap prefer underground shit. Me, I like the old school gangsta. Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" and Snoop's "Doggystyle" were just about all I listened to when I was 13-14 (except I also had a major Beatles obsession at the same time, go figure). The sheer brutality of the lyrics, delivered in such a cool, laid back manner, was so thrilling to me. Years and years later, after a long hiatus from rap, I got into a phase where I was listening to those two rap albums a lot, and figured I should purchase more material that was part of the history of those albums, so I bought NWA's "Straight Outta Compton." I liked it a lot at the time, but only now am I realizing what a brilliant record it is. While the harshness of the lyrics may appear one-dimensional at first, there are also some songs that detract from the street-thug image and even some that show a playful side of the group. While I dig the flow of the raps, the music on the record is particularly awesome, with Dr. Dre and DJ Yella putting together some solid beats with kickass scratches and samples to boot. I just thought I'd mention my fascination with this music, even if it may be taboo to admit liking music of this nature. |

I like rap, but I don't buy rap records cause my wife hates that, and I couldn't listen to them. She beats me, you know.

It leaves me cold I'm afraid. Can't like everything I suppose although I'm pretty keen on cross over stuff like Rage Against The Machine.

NWA are a bunch of misogynistic fucks. Hate them, absolutely can't stand that type of shite.
I remember back in the day they had this song called A bitch is a bitch, and I would see girls dancing to it like it was the coolest thing ever.
Listen to Public Enemy or something will ya, or go for some De la soul or Tribe called quest, actually I just saw Chuck D the other day at the U of A here, (part of their revolutionary speaker series) Bloody brilliant he is, but even he said NWA sucks. I mean do you think that this perpetuation of the gangsta/thug stereotype is helping any african americans really. Then you get these teenage suburban kids talkin smack and trash, as if. |

Plus Chuck didn't appreciate that NWA would take the word nigger and make it into some mainstream term of endearment. You can't change a word like that. |

And its groups like NWA that started this circus of guns, girls, cars, money, bling bling.... Its a joke, like when's the last time snoop pimped anything?! And since when is it cool to be a p-i-m-p. The labels love it tho, they get richer while they're still exploiting black people.
Chuck D just had a video banned from MTV while we can still watch shit from assholes like 50 cent. Makes no sense.
Okay that's it for my rant |

Hey TarTar,
If you love the rap game, check this out Yo. (This is windows media broadband) http://www.sonymusic.com/artists/Three6Mafia/Video/GhettoChickVidFull_300.asx
This a 2003 song, but they have been around since honeys been down. Look up their old shit, cuz they rap 'bout killing and Sh#t. Three 6 Mafia are probably bad people, but they rap about evil things so wonderfully.
I do not purchase that kind of music and actually I do not even listen to it. The way I know about it is that I grew up in the ghetto of Houston's Greens Point (AKA Guns Point) area. Ok I am getting bored now. I am going to play Halo with my wonderful wife that I feel in love with 6 years ago, to date. BIZ-NATCH!
P.S. I think that I am going to use this for Malax’s game – Hahahahahhahahahahahahahahah…ha

MTV is banned from my home. I'd say it's far far worse than nwa when it comes down to exploitation.

3rd base were pretty cool and Tribe called quest. Nwa well they were the first to use violence to promote themselfs, i think they distorted the rapscene and moved the worlds eyes from the true "message". Today theres still De la soul and Jeru the damaja.

I remember seeing an interview with Chuck D in 1993 or 1994 on BET where he was talking about the problem with gangsta rap and that Snoop Dogg's lyrics were sending a bad message to the youth. Then, he admitted that he was a fan of Snoop Dogg and listened to him a lot because the beats and Dre's production were so phat, and Snoop had one of the dopest deliveries in rap. He couldn't help liking the music, even though he wanted Snoop to rap about more positive things, or at least present a more intelligent view of the street life. I really do need to check out some of that old Public Enemy stuff. I was just watching Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" recently, which has a character named Radio Raheem walking around with a boombox that is perpetually blasting Public Enemy's "Fight the Power." |

De la soul is awesome, too bad I don't know where that cd got to. That's all the rap I need, the rest of it is all pretty much the same, so I don't bother with it. I hate rap these days because they aren't actually rapping! Half the time nothing rhymes, the other half 2 or 3 things rhyme and it's repeated over and over to generic bass and some stupid twinkly noise or screechy voice sample. I suppose that's why they call it R&B and hip hop and stuff now, because they can't hang with people who can actually rap. |

Also Sonic Youth has a song with a little Chuck D in it from way back called Cool Thing. He just happened to be at the same studio or something, check it out. |

I have two rap albums.
Outkast - "Stankonia" Outkast - "Speakerboxx/The Love Below"
As you can see I really try to buy an ecclectic blend of rap music.
Though Outkast seems to be on such a higher plain than all those other "rap" artists that I'm not sure if you can even put them in the same genre.

There's always Blackalicious...Since i heard there music I've had them in my top 5 albums....though i can never commit to an actual top 5...but still the POINT is they are there, this is good, sans-guns/girls/cars/crap hip-hop...they collaborated with ben harper, zac de la rocha and many other cool cool cats. So if you have never heard of these dudes, i HIGHLY recommend checkin this shit out. Everyone that i have turn onto Blackalicious always loves em.
yeh there's my tidbit.

I admit I used to listen to rap before I got into rock. The Chronic was a favorite of mine, even though I only liked the singles. I was very dumb and impressionable.

Blackalicious, Jurassic 5, A Tribe Called Quested... might as well mention the Roots while we're talking about your essential left-of-center rap. Anyone remember Us3, they had a huge hit with "Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)" about 10 years ago. That was a damn good record, packed with live jazz instrumentation over the beats, and plenty of samples from classic jazz records, too. The rappers' abilities on it was a bit lax at times, or at least sounded more like early rap flow, but the lyrics were flavorful and positive. I really enjoyed that record when I was younger, and it was a rap album I could actually play out loud at my parents house rather than hiding it in my dresser drawer and having to always listen on headphones, a la The Chronic. |
