LIVE: Frank Black Monday November 04, 2002 @ 06:30 PM By: ChartAttack.com Staff
Horseshoe Tavern October 31 Toronto, Ontario by Keith Carman
Standing inside a packed Horseshoe for number three of Frank Black’s five-night stint at the Horseshoe, it dawned on me: most of these people aren’t here for today’s Frank Black. Truth be told, they probably don’t even know his new shit, or that his band is called The Catholics. Even more depressing was that the realization that some weren’t even there for Frank Black. They wanted his alter ego, Black Francis, singer-guitarist for the more-popular-in-death alternative outfit The Pixies, but were settling. Then they heard him play and with the head-bobbing approvals, the crowd turned into a mass of converts.
Kicking off the first of two sets rather informally, Frank Black strolled out on stage and dove into a few numbers from his recent albums Black Letter Days and Devil’s Workshop, both released in Canada by Sonic Unyon. Barely into the bridge of the first song, one could tell that this wasn’t the same irritable and arrogant Black that "graced" the same stage a year earlier. While that man was everything short of a bitter arsehole, this one seemed to have accepted his past and, dare we say, embraced it. While he was still very quiet, an aura of calm drifted off the stage, permeating the crowd.
Breaking up the new material, Black occasionally tore into some of those previously abhorred (he used to refuse to acknowledge them) Pixies tunes with grace, style and even a bit of enthusiasm. Classics such as "Gouge Away," "Mr. Grieves," "Cactus" and "Monkey Gone To Heaven" were delivered with punch and grit, accented by the impeccable sound and tightness of The Catholics, who were even more impressive with the recent material. It almost seemed like even the odd bum notes were cunningly placed to assure you they weren’t just up there miming to the albums. Like, holy shit dude… it rocked! |
