Whilst sifting through the member profiles, I stumbled upon yours and noticed that you say you try to play the OB8, but mostly it just plays you. What is the OB8? |

oh!!!! It is an Oberheim 8 - a lovely analog synthesizer I am in love with it and try to play it here it is:
Here's a whole list of Oberheim synths. The 8 is "eight voice" with lots of programmable patches. I like to run it thru a DP-4 and a Wedge for extra fx. also here: http://www.synthmuseum.com/oberheim/obe8voice01.html are you into synths, etc.? |

I am a lousy musician (IMO), but I really get into this thing, and have come up with some great loops. That's why I say it mostly plays me. I don't know what the hell I'm doing most of the time. I have tried to put together some songs in Acid, using Soundforge, but I got no skillz. |

I know absolutely nothing about synthesizers. I am a guitar man. And I really don't know that much about guitars outside of playing them and turning knobs on the amp until it sounds rockin'. |

Ive got the Oberheim as a piece of software. It would be super dandy if I could only get my midi controller to talk to my PC....sigh

They call em 'softsynths'. I've got loads of em. FM7, Pro 52 are popular ones. You play them via a midi keyboard of some kind into your PC or mac via a midi cable adapted to your joystick port. I just bought a controller a couple of weeks ago, and I've been tearing my hair out trying to get the thing to talk to my pc. It should be effortless by all accounts.

ahh yes, I had to ask my hubbie - he's the musician. I was thinking of that product, "Reason" I think? Yeah: http://www.propellerheads.se/ It has virtual/soft synth programs for all sorts of stuff - I've never gotten around to using it, but from what I've seen/heard it looks pretty cool. One of these days I hope to understand how all those patches in the patchbays are mapped out - I have to ask him to set it up for recording most of the time. The studio is like an alien planet to me. I don't speak the language, I just make some noises! |

Thanks for that link MCA - looks really cool!
hey MC Andalusia ;) and Interloper - this may be a dumb question, but have either of you ever subscribed to the digital hell or analog heaven mailing lists? I haven't been a subscriber in a long time (a lot of information, and it seems moves in cycles of topics - lately everybody's on about VA on analog heaven, which is kind of weird), but they can be very very useful.

bored? try: "SINK" Probably the most popular Discordian game ever!!!!! http://blog.23ae.com/?p=69
The purpose of Sink is to sink an object in water or mud or anything you can sink something in. Sinking is allowed in any manner. To date, ten pound chunks of mud were used to sink a tobacco can. It is preferable to have a pit of water or a hole to drop things in. But rivers--bays--gulfs--even oceans can be used. Turns are taken thusly; who somever gets the junk up and in the air first. It shall be the duty of all persons playing "Sink" to help find more objects to sink, once one object is sunk. Upon sinking the sinker should yell "I sank it!!" or something equally as thoughtful. Naming of objects is sometimes desirable. The object is named by the finder of such object and whoever sinks it can say for instance, "I sunk Colombus, Ohio."

Is that 'Discordian' as in, 'sounds like Dischord', i.e. Washington DC-based post-hardcore?

No! I can't be bothered. I should be going to bed anyway, I have to get up in time to sit at work and write stuff here.

I love analog synths, but they cost a fortune. So I got myself a microkorg, but given the fact that I'm more a lousy guitarman myself I need some time to get into all these patches and stuff
