No matter how many times I hear it wedged between "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Runnin' With the Devil" on classic rock radio, no matter how many more times I hear it next to Flock of Seagulls or Kajagoogoo or "The Lovecats" on some "flashback 80's" show, no matter how parodied the video and vocal stylings have been over the years, I can never, ever get tired of this song. It's fucking brilliant. It's the absolute apotheosis of both Byrne and Eno's carreer. I would basically put it just behind "Good Vibrations" as the greatest pop record of it's time (that gets overplayed to all hell, but who gives a shit?!). I think it is about as far out as pop music ever got. Oh god, how I fucking love this song.

Not trying to change the subject but True Stories is a great movie.
Always made me laugh.
ONCE IN A LIFETIME is so good, it's scary. |

Yeah, it is one of the greatest songs ever. I like the stop making sense version, it's easily the best. Anybody buying the box set (called once in a lifetime)? I plan on getting it for christmas. And goddamnit, I still haven't seen true stories! |

Psycho Killer is killer. Also like AND SHE WAS. I will always enjoy the images conjured by "stay up late", especially now that I have had kids. Some times you do in fact just want to make them stay up all night. Cant really explain it. |

Not to quote the whole song but my favorite line is:
"Having fun with nobody, little smile on his face..."
the essence of toddler-dom... |

Did you ever give into the temptation and keep them up all night, Dallas? (I worry myself, because I think I probably would.) |

such an amazing song - one of the most bizarre things you'll hear on classic rock radio - and certainly one of the best

no not all night, but, the best analogy for me is after the baby has missed his nap window (12-3pm) after that if he naps he WILL be up all night. So no matter how sleepy the little guy is, you gotta make him stay up. You walk him around, you wrestle him, you give him a little cracker, watch him drink from-a-cup, anything but let those eyes close. Then its a nice easy transition to an early bed...

Well, I surely do appreciate it...still haven't located or visited the place...I know roughly where it is though. |

I cannot agree more. This has always been a standout song for me. Musically, the off kilter loop in the background makes the tune for me. But most importantly, the lyric is so beautiful, and not to mention very very sad at the same time. I always took it to be about the realization of where one's life is far after it can be changed. Wonderful. Shit...that whole Remain in Light record is my favorite. Adrian Belew has incredible, incredible parts all over it. Particularly the video game sounds that constitute a solo on the first track, which I really can't remember the title of.

I should also mention that I love "Don't Stop Believin'", but I hate "Runnin' with the Devil".

i like "air," "artists only" and "memories can't wait"..
good stuff.
i love that line "I don't have to prove that i am creative".. i knew a lot of people like that in college. ie. who pretended to be "artists" but really didn't do anything. |

Talking Heads are (were) a brilliant band, but I think they've many better songs (than OIAL)...check out the albums, they're always available for a low price.
I saw David Byrne live last year in Dublin and it was fan-f*ckin-tastic. Brilliant gig. |

I agree, the albums are absolutely where it is at, but I just wanted to point out that song in question is a staple of certain hackneyed radio formats and gets played all to death, and in spite of that I still think the brilliance of its innovation cannot be dimmed or obscured.

One of their most underrated songs has to be this must be the place (naive melody). I can't think of another band that is close to as "innocent" as the talking heads, except maybe TMBG. Other good ones are "Mind", "Paper", and pretty much anything on the first 2 albums. |
