Here's a quicky while I'm at work today.
What are your desert island discs? You must choose three records, one movie and one book (excluding the Bible) to take to a desert island with you.
Here's mine:
1) Death To The Pixies - The Pixies
2) Way To Blue - Nick Drake
3) Therapy? - Screamager

4) The Godfather

5) The Commitments - Roddy Doyle

Obviously these are liable to change, but they're what I came up with on the spur of the moment.
So these are my truths: tell me yours.

1) TOTY - FB
2) Low - David Bowie
3) Tilt - Scott Walker

4) Tears Of The Black Tiger

5) A Clockwork Orange - Anthony Burgess

These are my truths: tell me yours. (the forum version of 'pass it on')

Do we get a record player? Or a cd player/mp3 player with electric power - is the power on the island? Or from batteries? A generator? Solar? Otherwise I guess I would go for the record albums that fold out and have extra pages and the like, maybe a bunch of Rod Stewart and Michael Bolton and their ilk, as noone would miss em, so's I can use it for fuel and a house (paint over hideous mightmare-inducing images) and shoes and brushing my teeth and wiping my butt and so on.
I gotta work on my desert/deserted island list if we get to have a record player, though it may be a different list depending on if it's a cd player or mp3 - album art!...

I think some people are not taking this seriously (Coldheartofstone), some are taking it too seriously (apl), some are just plain not reading the rules (swimmer - oi, no Bible!).

Also, I feel people may be using this as an opportunity to look cool:

I forgot to mention, this idea is (c) BBC Radio 4, and I think you're allowed one luxury item.
At this point I would say that 'boat' is forbidden, same for 'light aircraft', 'teleport machine' etc.

I'll go with my guitar or a piano, which isn't particularly exciting, but is probably the most truthful.

Hmm, 3 cd's would be...

Teenager of the Year
Doolittle
(erm, best not look too obsessed and choose something that doesn't feature frank...)
Modest Mouse - Moon and Artartica (as I've only started getting into them!)

My movie would be (tough one!)...

Truman Show (I don't know why, such a sweet film, and I normally hate Jim Carrey - my other choice would be Space Odyssey but...)

My book would be...

(have to choose a Space Odyssey book, tricky!)

2001: Space Odyssey (but only just ahead of 2010!)

Luxury item...

My Acoustic Guiar (easy one!)

Weird! - I'm reading this right now. I have also read White Noise, which I enjoyed more than this, but I am still only about a third of the way through. I agree that it just doesn't have the same appeal.

Good choices all around. I'll copy some of you.

CDs: DiTS
Beatles: White Album
Aimee Mann: Bachelor #2

Book: This one is tough. perhaps the Complete Collected works of Hermann Hesse (this probably doesn't exist but who cares?)

Movie: good choice with the Blade Runner glaish - hmmm, do I wanna go with that? Oh hell I guess Fight Club.

where's the tv and vcd/dvd player??

Music.
1. Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
2. Beach Boys - SMiLE
3. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

Book.
Catcher in the Rye

Movie.
Fight Club

This was tough...Pet Sounds is the easy, obvious choice. Other than that, I couldn't think of any album I'd love to hear over and over and over and over and over. Dark Side of the Moon, even though it's somewhat of a cheesy frat boy sorta pick, is a great album and would definitely mix well with my dehydration-enduced halucinations.

There's alot of people on this topic that like Fight Club...interesting choice. It is a pretty good movie, but alot of people choose it as their only one to take on a desert island...I don't think I could pick one movie to take, nor just 3 CDs. El Barto, no FB to take with you? Then all you would ever hear of him again would be a snippet of "Where is My Mind?"

yeah El Barto.. 2 Beach Boys albums and no FB or Pixies? i mean, considering how difficult it already is to narrow this down, do you really want to waste a slot on another Beach Boys album? i'd say take Pet Sounds and then pick something else. but that's me.

your picks are your picks.

yeah, Fight Club is popular here.. i think that's kind like this generation's Clockwork Orange or something.. the kids dig it. i liked it, and i like Fincher.. but it's kind of a downer movie really. i think if i were stuck on a Desert Island i'd want something a little more uplifting.. like (probably) my favorite movie of all time HAROLD AND MAUDE. (plus it's got great music)..

but then i still think an instructional documentary about getting off a desert island might be most valuable..

I wonder if anyone's ever made an instructional video series on how to cope with boredom on a desert island.

what if: instead of bringing your favorite albums and books, you were given the option of bringing Jennifer Connelly instead? (but that would mean no albums or movies).. what would you do?

I couldn't think of a Frank Black or Pixies album that I'd love to hear over and over. Am I going to be burned for this? I don't know...It's really hard to pick just ONE. I guess, if I really had to pick one, it'd probably be Black Letter Days just because there are so many tracks on there...so many good tracks on there. OK, swap SMiLE for BLD. 21 Reasons will probably make me want to kill myself, though.

This really does have to be the greatest album title ever!

You're all discussing Fight Club: did you not think the second half, with the Project Whatever kind of sucked? The first part was fantastic, and I think Edward Norton is superb. I didn't even see the twist coming, but don't you think it was kind of ridiculous, like a bunch of grown men running round t-p-ing stuff?

I think the idea is that you're not meant to take it literally, the idea being that you tell the world your favourite stuff...
