So, which is the best Sonic Youth album? I was always told it was Daydream Nation, but having got the Dirty re-issue recently I think that is probably better. I don't have all the others to compare, but I here Evol, Goo and Bad Moon Rising are also good.

Sorry for wasting your time, but it beats work...

I love 'Dirty' and it's probably my favourite though Daydream Nation is pretty great (i'm sure you'll agree).

I also quite like 'Confusion Is Sex'...

My personal fave is Sister. My top 5 would be
Sister
EVOL
1000 Leaves
Experimental Jet Set
Confusion Is Sex

Well, they've never done a bad album IMO. Although I've stopped listening to them around 1999 for some reason.

Bad Moon Rising isn't all that great, in my opinion. A lot of unnecessary noise and meandering nonsense, even by Sonic Youth standards. I've owned it for probably 7 months and have only listened a few times, so maybe it takes more listens to really understand, but I haven't had the desire to put that much time and effort into that record. I've never exactly been blown away by an entire record by Sonic Youth, but I do enjoy quite a few songs by them, and feel they are a highly important band. Some of my favorite songs are Teen Age Riot, Dirty Boots, Little Trouble Girl, Nevermind (What was it anyway) and The Empty Page. Thurston and Kim seem like really great people, too. Perhaps it's just a matter of time before the REAL genius of the less accessible Sonic Youth songs hits me. I've had that happen with plenty of bands where I just wasn't in the right place in my life to really understand them when I first came across their music.

The best albums to start with are
Daydream nation
Goo
Dirty
Experimental jet set trash and no star
washing machine.

Anything before Daydream nation is a bit crazy.

You can't go wrong as long as you DON'T GET NY City Ghosts and Flowers. Washing Machine is my personal favorite and let's not forget Murray St.

Best? I don't know how everyone can think DN is the best...I liked it for a while, but eh...it's too long. There are some great tunes, but overall it's not a favorite. NYCG&F is excellent, man. So is Murray Street. Experimental Jet Set was a favorite of mine for a while, because I see it as their transitional album...it has a perfect mix of their older, darker, punk rock sound and their more mature sonic melody of the latter day albums. Sister is a great album...A Thousand Leaves is really good, but I didn't like it much at first. God, you know, I don't know what my favorite SY album is. Maybe it's still Experimental Jet Set.

personally, don't like NYCG&F, but I LOVE Murray Street. I like Washing Machine okay, but quite apart from the album I think The Diamond Sea is one of their defining acheivements. Have decided after much hemming/hawing not to go to ATP. They didn't get the Boredoms, so I won't have to tear my hair out over this one.
