So who here is a taper? I usually record Frank's San Diego area shows. Maybe we could start up a cdr trading circle group where everybody who tapes a show on a certain tour hooks up the rest of the circle.. wait, that's not a circle, more like a star or something, but you know what i'm talking about. but Frank isn't coming to my town this tour/leg, so I guess i'm out of it this round, but serisouly, this is a good way to spread music and encourage people to record shows. |

I just have an analog walkman recorder with external mic, but i have been thinking of moving up to minidisc or dat, if anyone could give some guidance as to best kind to get, best place to get them, etc, please reply. As for Frank being taper-friendly, if you ask him official-like, I think he usually says no. But I know some fans who are buddy-buddy with Frank who always tape his shows, so I don't think it bothers him too much. |

I know there are couple of good links around about using mini-disc to record. You can even build yourself a pretty decent set of stereo mics for cheap (they're nice and small too). I don't think most artist are too sensitive about it, as long as you aren't trying to make a profit.

To Whom It May Concern:
As long as we don't know about it we don't care. For example, a walkman in your jacket? Cool. Stereo mics taped to the back wall of the club? Not cool. Mainly because people with sophisticated recording equipment tend to get in the way of other patrons trying to enjoy the show. And don't bother the soundperson with requests for channels to tie into. He/she has other stuff to do (like mix our show) and while it may all be friendly, we just don't have time for that kind of accomodation. But bootleg away and have fun. I mean, don't start your own record company or something like that. We have a very good attorney. And give me a copy if you have a chance (my brother likes to collect that kind of stuff).

someone from philly, perhaps even me, should get a recording of the TLA show, its nice to have a recording of shows you've been at. sometimes i come home and go to sleep and then the next morning forget half of what happened last night, and no there were no external substances affecting my memory. oh, by the way, watch out for the TLA in philly frank it has a whacky PA system.

Yeah I've always contemplated recording a show, but I've never gotten around to it. I would recommened if you're going to tape something mike, you should test the set up at a show before at the TLA (or whatever venue). You wouldn't want to go to the hassle only to end up with distortion. |

The last time I saw FB in Atlanta, there was a girl recording the show with a video cam.....I admired her ability to hold the thing up all show. Anybody got any vids of show, how is the audio?

besides this taping weirdness, still i turned out to be a pretty normal middle aged adult!! scott |

I was wondering what kind of microphone is the best to use? I have a Mini disk player/recorder with an optical line in, and a port for a mic.
Also I don't have anything to trade, but I would like to know how to get some live shows.

Heads up- 'As long as we don't know about it' means if they see you with it they will stop you and take the tape even if it's in your pocket. Boston Avalon show- American Flag sweater roadie took mine and he wasn't friendly.

"American Flag sweater roadie"
was this an employee of the avalon, or someone on tour with FB?
just looking for clarification.

Hey big galoof- nice hearing from you... I think we talked online a year or two ago. Were you at the show? I thought I saw you up-front a little left of center.
I am fairly sure he was someone with the band since he had a backstage pass around his neck.
Here's the story...
I'm on the right of the stage in front to the big speakers. What looked like the head Avalon guy in a black jacket saw me first- came over and told me that I'd have to stop recording and "give it to him".
I told him Frank Black lets people tape as long as it's from a walkman in their pocket. The Avalon guy then goes over twenty feet away brings back a guy wearing the american flag sweater (backstage pass around his neck) from the back stage area.
Roadie is probably the wrong word. I'd guess band manager- an older guy with gray hair. He spent the entire show in the back stage on the right as close as you could be to the band without being on stage. Looked to me like he was with the band and coordinating with Avalon people.
This guy then says the band only lets fans take pictures and doesn't allow recording. I try to debate the issue further and he said explictly under no circumstances does frank let fans record the show. "You're going to have to give it to me."
I thought he wanted me to hand over my recording equipment so I said no I don't think so. So then he said he was going to have me thrown out of the show and turns to the avalon guy behind him. Seeing my options as fairly limited I made a run for it...
I get about 20 yards to the back of the club and I hear the guy 10 feet behind me yelling for me to stop. Thinking getting thrown out of the show is better than possibly getting arrested so I stop. The sweater guy demands that I give him the tape now.
I eject the tape and give it to him. He asks if I have any blanks. I say no. He said if he sees me recording again then he'll have me thrown out of the show.

chief daddy! i had a link in my favorites to your extensive mp3 library - quite exhaustive!
well, i don't think the guy you describe is on tour with FB... there seem to be two non-musician types who are traveling with them these days - both young guys. no guy with graying hair... well, i hope not anyway - given what FB himself has posted here regarding tapers.
again, nice hearing from you too, chief!

I have no idea who he was- all I can say is he certainly portrayed himself as being with the band and had the credentials.
I guess I did imply more (no disrespect intended) so here's my new heads-up to tapers...
If you're recording a show then be aware that you can be hassled/thrown-out if seen by people who don't know about frank's willingness to let people record from a walkman in their pocket.

whats the chance the guy that chased you taping was Ken Goes...i never have seen that guy, just know he has managed or been involved with Frank forever, and he lives up in the part of the world (mass)..so maybe it was him and he took it upon himself to do his managerial duties...I have talked to others who said he wasnt entirely friendly but never got a description of the guy. Just a thought, normally it seems that there is no "tour manager" for the band besides the guys themselves..I remember ken was real anti taping back even in the pixies days

There were two 'roadies' with Frank Black & The Catholics...they were pretty much their personal techs. Scott is the band's tour manager.

I think the idea is that "officially" taping is not allowed, and in a large public situation, Frank might have to say "sorry, no." My impression is that in the company of this forum, he felt comfortable conceding that inconspicuous taping is ok with him, provided we don't try to sell it around. The important part is to avoid being discovered, as it will not be Frank himself with whom you will need to justify things.

Very cool. wrote three sentences to expand on how cool that was, and they all sounded stupid. So I deleted them all and wrote this instead. I'm pretty happy with the results.
