I think I can guess the answer to this one, but anyway...

I've only just 'got' Teenager Of The Year. By that I mean that I've had it for ages, but have never seemed to enjoy it particularly, tending towards the disco craziness of FB and the rootsy r'n'r of the Catholics stuff. However, most people on this board seem to rate TOTY as the best FB album, so I gave it another listen after ages of not having heard it. And its amazing! (predictably)
So whats wrong with me? Why didn't I get it first time around?
I think it may have been the length that put me off, 22 songs is a lot to get your head around.

Also, is it a coincidence that the sleepy fly in my lampshade went nuts when Abstract Plain came on?

There is nothing wrong with you (though someone else may beg to differ), people bloom at different times. Though this is a very small example of you blossoming, it is analogous with eureka!. Some stereo-typical examples that I can think of are (I do not endorse these, they are just common to me): a person 'gets saved/finds jesus' after a lifetime of seeing religion all around them self, hell to counter that I bet that there have been individuals that where very religious and one day they decided that it was bull shit; all hell I cannot think any more, but you get the idea. For a long stretch of time one can have the fact or 't'ruth in front of their eyes but something just prevents them from grasping it. I used to say to my relatives that they were probably correct about what they were trying to teach me but I am going to do 'this' then some time later I was like oh yeah that other way was better or now I understand why they said that. blah-blah blah-blah-blah. Great Record, by the way.

Um, yes. I was expecting this to turn into a TOTY appreciation thread, but if we're going philosophical, rock on!

The word you're looking for is EPIPHANY, but it wasn't really that. I'd always liked TOTY, just not loved it. Now I struggle to think why it didn't leave such a major impression on me.
FB himself admits that it takes a few listens to properly enjoy his records, and thats pretty much correct: the exception for me is SMYT, which passed muster from the get-go.
I guess I just didn't give Teenager space to breathe. Because I'm an eedjit.

I wouldn't say there's anything wrong with you. Sometimes a person just needs the right circumstances to connect with something, and the timing has to be just right.
At first, I only liked the first 5 songs on TOTY. A month or two later I started liking tracks 16-19, and 22. Another month went by and I found out I liked Speeedy marie through ole mulholland. It took a year until I could listen to fazer eyes, I could stay, pure denizen, and bad, wicked world. I think I bought it back in '97, so I've had a chance to really get into it. If you haven't read Camden Joy's rant on TOTY, you should try to track it down. lesseee...
http://www.camdenjoy.com/ is his site, and it's republished in this book http://www.tnibooks.com/lj-moreinfo.html .

"There's something wrong with us. Something very, very wrrooong with us." Sorry, Cheeseman, had to throw in the Stripes ref. It usually takes me a good 12 months to properly appreciate one FB album so what you're saying sounds pretty normal. I wasn't crazy about TOTY when I first bought it back in '94 but slowly it grew in me. I didn't really recognize it as genius (my opinion of course)for quite a while .. took a good 6 years. BLD is another great example. When I first got it, I liked a few tracks but was mostly so-so on the record. Now, it's one of my favorite records ever, right up there with Dylan, Zeppelin, Beatles .. killer record! Like yourself, I also loved SMYT from the get go, it's very accessible and has some great songwriting on it. Anyway, glad you're "seeing the light" or whatever ..

Cheers!

TOTY, while a great album, is overhyped and hardly, in my opinion, his best album. I just recently came to appreciate the Cult of Ray after owning it for some years.

My 'wrongness' is totally opposite. I bought the orange/yellow/turquoise album when it first came out, then TOTY as soon as it came out. Loved them back then and still do. COR took a bit more getting used to and is a bit patchy.

Confession time!!. I have not totally grasped the concept and sound of FB & the Catholics. All of the post COR albums have stand out tracks but I always seem to want to skip one or two when listening. Second confession - I've only just bought Black Letter Days, Devil's Workshop and SMYT. Gulp. I am struggling with the 'country' influence. Maybe I'll grow to like it but not at the moment.

Seems like thats not a problem from earlier replies, barney.
I guess its true about taking the time to appreciate an album: its so easy sometime just to put the cd back on the shelf and let it gather dust.
I suppose now I'd better listen to Cult Of Ray again, cos I've never really got into that album.

As for Catholics, I think this rule applies even more. Its so easy to judge a cd by its first listen, but to really appreciate the songs, they need time to mature. Like wine or cheese.

Unless, of course, the wine is Blue Nun and the cheese is 'American' cheese (of the mmmmmm.....64 slices variety)

There is nothing wrong with you.

I've said this 1000 times, but COR is what got me into FB.

"Oddballs... everyone is different"

I loved toty the first time I heard it, and Derek tabbed the whole thing, so being able to play all the songs is great. I remember when I was in school, I'd be singing Callistan while walking to the bars.

Dude, that is freaky, but the exact same happened to me in... I think it was 1997.

I had heard of the Pixies, and had heard people tell me I would really like them, but I never listened. That was as early as 1992, I think that was the first time I heard Nimrod's son, and may girlfriend's freaky brother would always say the lyrics to that song. Then one day I think in 1997 I got a Rolling Stone which had a top 50 or something list of must have or defineng or somehow special shit and Surfa Rosa was one of them. I listened to it constantly. I thought the guy was dead or quit or something after the Pixies. Then my roommate brought home COR on tape no less and I've a frank freak ever since.

Absolutely fascinating isn't it? Weed.

Heh heh. that is a bit odd. I saw the Headache video on MTV2 (probably in early 97 as well), went to a store & bought COR on tape, cause it was all they had by FB, and the gift certificate my grandma gave me was only $10. 2 days later at a different music store, I saw a sticker on the pixies cover that said it contained "Where is my mind?" which my sister's friend put on a mix tape for me years before, but i had lost the tracklist for, so I bought it. I liked 'em both, and since I got in to 'em separately, I can judge FBs work without any Pixies prejudice. It's nice to be able to do that.
