I just saw a Bob Dylan reissue box set that had every dylan album ever at Cosco for about $100. I haven't heard ANY Dylan albums, but being a songwriter I feel it's time I should. Has anyone picked up any of the reissues? Are they any good? Is it worth buying all his albums, or are they inconsistent?

I find it really hard to believe it's every one of his albums as I have I believe like 18 Dylan albums and I don't even come close to owning his entire catalogue. But to answer your question you can't go wrong with Dylan.

his mid-seventies stuff is pretty dang sweet. My two favorites are Desire and Street Legal. ...I have actually capitalized on the reissues by buying a few of the older, non-remastered cds at a reduced rate. The remasters are pretty damn tempting, but i have not the funds. Had I the money, I would buy all the remasters, some of the albums needed it. |

yeah, i think as far as official albums go it's like somewhere around 40.. but then he's recorded so much other stuff too..
his albums are hit and miss. especially through the 80's. if you're looking for somewhere to start, you can't go wrong with GREATEST HITS really. even though "greatest hits" are kind of cheesy. this one really does have all his greatest hits.
as for individual albums, i'd have to say BLONDE ON BLONDE is my favorite.
but i also really like THE BOOTLEG SERIES, Volumes 1-3, which is a box set of previously unreleased versions of songs - demos / live recordings etc.. it's pretty sold if you ask me. some amazing versions of the songs you already like.

I've really liked every volume of the Bootleg Series. Especially Volume 5, the Rolling Thunder Revue. I can't wait for volume 6.

First off - SHAME ON YOU.
The Remasters set you've seen is only a fraction of his albums, but it is a decent sampling of fan favorites arranged chronologically. They have been RE-MIXED, not just remastered, and though there are numerous subtle sonic improvements over his originally-issued CDs (which were notorious for being some of the lamest-quality transfers of a superstar's work by a major label), you can easily enjoy the original issues, or better yet, pick them up on vinyl for a better understanding of what made them so great in the first place.
It's way too hard to recommend one or a few of the LPs. They run the gamut from traditional folk songs to acerbic tongue-in-cheek diatribes to flat-out nasty R & B. There are some that are generally considerd to be his "best work", but that's all totally subjective when it comes down to the mood and tone that you might personally appreciate.
I have (literally) thousands of hours of Dylan in my archives.Send me a Private Message if you'd like me to compile a killer multi-disc sampler for you of official tracks, bootlegs and whatnot. That might give you a much better idea than a greatest hits CD of where to begin as far as purchasing the albums yourself. I have found that some of his most commercially overlooked albums contain the real gems...

I really like the song "Foot of Pride" it's Infidels era, but I actually prefer Lou Reeds cover of it on the Bob Dylan 25 Anniversary Concert CD.

I have everything Dylan released in the 60s, and also have Blood on the Tracks and Time Out of Mind. I find all Dylan songs to be hit or miss. Sometimes, he's got entertaining or insightful lyrics that make it really engaging for me, while other times the song gets repetitive and I'm just not interested in listening to him babble for 4 or 5 minutes (or in some cases 7 minutes) and skip the track. I think that Another Side of Bob Dylan is my favorite record from the 60s, and Freewheelin' Bob Dylan is a good album, too. I don't listen to Dylan very much, though. I like his music a great deal, but he's nowhere close to being a favorite of mine. |

as a blatant name-drop moment, i got to meet old Bob once. quite an honor.. even though the entire transaction lasted for about a second and a half.
he's not the most talkative fella.

The Bob Dylan album that moves me the most is definitely 'Desire' - every single song is a work of genius. |

Yeah, shame on me. My parents are die hard Christians and I grew up listening to really bad "contemporary" christian music like Amy Grant, Debbie Boone (daughter of Pat), GLAD, The Imperials (not THE Imperials, but a more religious, more sucky Imperials), etc. I started listening to secular radio around '85 and didn't start buying rock music until '88 (INXS - Kick was the first) so it's taken me a looong time to get familiar with all the pre-late eighties stuff while trying to keep up with current music. I also tend to delve head first into one band at a time and devour everything they did, rather than pick at samplings of lots of bands. Anyhow, thank you Mr. Radiator for helping me out.
By the way, The Eagles suck. Just thought you'd like to know...
