Does anyone else go crazy over there cd's? I have a cd book that has cd's I listen to. Then I have a shelf that has the cases of the cds from the book, in order, but there are also some cds in cases on the shelf that aren't "worthy" for the book, so they stay on the shelf. The one's that aren't "worthy" are cd's I don't listen to much, or only have a few good songs. Then in my other room I have a box full of cds that I only like a few songs on or don't want anymore. Is anyone else like this? So obsessed?

I'm having a hard time seeing how that is obsessive. We've got cds and books in almost evry room of the house, in all sorts of categorized fashions. And then some that are completely unorganized. Am I just nuts? Probably, but I don't see what that has to do with the price of beans. |

me and my brother are/were exactly like that. I have to have mine in abc order by artist, then in order by release date/recorded date if I have more than one by the same artist (which is often the case). My brother has the big book of cds, but I dont. Esp b/c those tend to get stolen and then you just have a bunch of empty cases :( This happened to several of my friends who left them in the car.
Hopefully santa will bring me an ipod and I wont have to worry with that crap anymore. (Edit: I suppose the ipod could get jacked just as easily as the book of cds, but its so cool I want one anyway! :) |

Jeez, not saying anyone is obsessed, but I thought I was crazy for, on rare occasions, even organizing my CD's! The ones I really like I tend to keep in one rack, though. (All of Pixies and FB of course!) I never organized them any other way besides that, though. |

I used to be really anal about my CDs, now I don't give a shit for some reason. My copy of SMYT already skips. Looks like I'll have to buy another one.
Lots of people copy their CDs and just listen to the copies. Maybe I should do that, I am just too lazy.
I don't know how I changed. I am way more obsessed with my DVDs and Video games though.

I'll admit, I am very obsessive about some things. Like, magazines, books, even newspapers, I am always very careful not to bend them. I think originally I got this way because of comic books, but now it applies to everything. My wife, on the other hand, thinks this is silly and I always find crumbled-up copies of Rolling Stone and the like all over the place. |

The organization of our CD collection completely baffles me, because every time I get used to the new system, my husband changes it. I can't find a goddamned thing. The man runs a college media center, and my greatest fear is that he'll barcode it all and set up a checkout system. He doesn't watch sports and has no interest in cars or electronics, so I guess I'll just have to tolerate this one weird O/C guy quirk.

I'm SUPER anal about my CD's The first thing I do when I open a new one is to rotate the disc in the case so it is right side up.

I remember when I bought Siamese Dream by the Smashing Pumpkins, I thought the artwork was so beautiful that I took the CD case to school the next day so I could stare at it. I was so excited to own that album. A kid sitting in front of me asked if he could see the booklet for a second, so I handed it to him. He glanced at it for a moment and then looked up to ask me something. He wasn't watching what he was doing and as he folded the booklet back up, folded the cover in half. I immediately freaked out and asked for him to give the booklet back. He handed it to me, not knowing what he'd done. I just yelled at him, "You bent it! You bent the cover!" He insisted that he hadn't, and I pointed out the slight crease in the middle of the cover that wasn't supposed to be there. He couldn't believe I was so upset. Looking at the small bend in the cover 7 years down the road, it was ridiculous to get so worked up over it, but at the time, Pumpkins were gods, and their album artwork was part of their sound, part of their expression. I went home sick from school when I got to my next class that day. I couldn't learn when such beauty had been tainted. For a long time, I was very particular about the organization of my CDs (alphabetical, chronologically for each artist) and made certain to always keep the CD in the jewel case when not listening to it. Even when I had up to around 200 CDs, I was good at keeping them organized. Nowadays, with a CD player in my car, tons of burned CDs that have no case, and around 400-500 (I honestly don't know for sure) store bought CDs, I find it a grueling task to keep them organized, and whenever I organize them alphabetically, it seems that they get out of order within a few weeks, which shows me that at least I make use of a lot of them by going back and listening to them a lot. I also have troubling feeling CDs are as sacred as I used to now, too, since vinyl seems more official to me. I don't listen to vinyl since I currently don't own a turntable (that works), but I do have a nice collection, and those seem like the real thing to me. The artwork is so much more accessible, the vinyl looks awesome, the sound is richer. The only disadvantage is how much easier they're damaged and the impracticality of their mobility, a la listening to them in the car or taking a bunch of them over to a friends. My film communications and photography teacher at college had Teenager of the Year on double vinyl. I must get my hands on a copy.

Dude, my copy of "Siamese Dream" by the Smashing Pumpkins is still flawless to this day, (the cover, not the actual CD, although it isn't too filled with scratches for being as old as it is) and if someone were to bend it even now I would freak out too. My copy of Show Me Your Tears, which has already been listened to uncountable times, is pretty pristine as well. I guess maybe I'm just materialistic, I just like to keep things nice.
If I owned many albums on vinyl, I would just collect them and store them somewhere, and for day-to-day listening just listen to CD's.

I try to keep all my books and CDs organized but there's so many. The thing that pisses me off the most is that everytime I get them perfectly organized I take some out and they go into the car for weeks or I buy new CDs and have to shift everything over a few places. So mostly I just have CDs and books in heaps all over the room. As long as I can find what I'm looking for I'm happy. I nearly killed a guy once because I thought he had stole my copy of Blank Generation, then I found it a few weeks later... As long as my CDs are around I'm happy I guess to some extent.

i'm pretty bad about CD care, admittedly. i try, but almost every one of my jewel cases ends up getting cracked within the first couple of days. and many of my cd's are scratched..
since i got some of those gigantic cd books, that's helped matters. i just keep stuff in there (2 of them thus far).. but also have stuff strewn about all over the place, in different rotating paterns (from car, to house, to work)..
i hate it when you get a scratch on a cd on your favorite track. my FB&C's self-titled is scratched on Solid Gold, which is probably my favorite song of the album.
it's like, do i buy the whole album again for that one song?
it's quite a conundrum. |

My entire copy of Nevermind skips like mad. I just bought Isolation Drills by Guided By Voices last week and was pissed when I took off the plastic and saw that the price sticker was hiding a fucking crack in the jewel case. Am I the only one that shakes a CD near his ear before purchase to make sure that the CD is secured correctly? I've bought too many CDs with this prongs in the middle that hold the disc broken to hell.

The jewel cases that are transparent on the little spindle/grip that holds the disc seem to break too damn easy. I like the CDs that have hidden artwork underneath that part, like Weezer's Pinkerton.
