I just watched this film for the first time. It was awesome. I really enjoy the "isolated-from-the-rest-of-the-world-and-must-defeat-evil-while-suspecting-that-any-and-everyone-around-you-is-potentialy-against-you" films. What's especially enjoyable about these older horror/sci-fi movies is that special effects only went so far, so the scariness/creepiness of the film relies more on mood and suspense than flashy effects. This movie is paced just right. Moments last as long as they need to, but no time is wasted in moving to the next step of the story. What there is of special effects is amazingly grotesque. This has become a new favorite of mine.

Agreed, the Thing is a good flick. To expand on what you were saying about special effects, I find that heavy-FX movies made before CGI are generally better than those films made after. Consider Aliens, Robocop, The Thing, Exorcist, Buckaroo Banzai, Altered States: these were films that didn't allow the FX they had (which were really great in some cases) to become the center of their story.

I've missed it countless times when it was on sci-fi but luckily sky one are showing it this tuesday and I'll definitely be watchin then. Watched a John Carpenter biography last night and that sufficiently wheted my appetite. Has anyone played the game? I've only read reviews and seen screenshots but it looks pretty kick ass.

For ten thousand years he slept, his mind feeding on the nightmares of the weak. Now he has awakened. As the night turned crimson, the fire-blade shattered and his power died. Then, the slaughter began...

Yep, very good film. Solid acting and true suspense. Don't make 'em like this anymore.

This is one of my all-time favorite Sci-Fi/horror films, and one of Carpenter's truly great moments. The butcchered edit that the Sci-Fi channel shows is a waste of time. try to find the special edition DVD, which has the same version that could be found on the old out of print Laserdisc.

I saw this on opening night in a small theatre, and was BLOWN AWAY. The Carpenter version is much closer in tone and spirit to the original short story than the (deservedly) beloved Howard hawks version from the 1950s.

On a side note, I just saw a brief snippet of an interview with Quentin Tarantino, where he said that he was surprised no critics ever picked up pn how much he ripped off Carpenter's version in Reservoir Dogs. He claimed that claustrophobic vibe of anyone being the enemy and people slowly turning on each other was the main impetus for his debut movie, and in retrospect, I can completely see the tribute he gave it.
