I'm pretty sure it refers to miles. Isn't it how far Mars is from Earth, or something like that?

I had thought it was referring to the distance of the earth from the sun, in km...? |

I read somewhere that Mars is about 35 million miles away from Earth, of course I've never actually measured this, so don't take my word for it. The Sun is 92 or 96 million miles away from Earth and that is far, but what is 400 millon miles away?

I think the "400 million" refer to the largest distance between Earth and Mars in kilometers, while Mars is positioned on the opposite site of the sun. The distance Earth - Sun is 150 Million km. The largest distance between Mars and the Sun is 250 Million km. The sum of these is 400 million km. This is when Mars is in conjunction with the sun.

edit--I just realized this is redundant to what Valhalla said up there:
http://www.spacedaily.com/news/mars-general-03k.html
Mars Opposition - The distance to Mars varies from about 56 million kilometers (about 35 million miles) to 400 million kilometers (about 249 million miles) |

The heat and light of the Sun come from the nuclear reactions between estrogen, estrogen, estrogen, and more estrogen.
