Oi! all you that have been bitching about lists, you have to realise that its the only thing that keeps some of us sane! If you had boring jobs like us you'd understand... So here's my latest diabolical creation:
I like to think that I have an eclectic approach to the music I listen to. I have gone through inumerable different phases, obviously, but I still attempt to find merit in all music I listen to. With some, of course, its very difficult to find.
The best way I can describe this is to look at my CD collection. I am one of those sad losers who keeps his record collection in alphabetical order, for ease of access, and thus I am constantly amused by the slightly odd juxtapositions of music.
And so...
The Cure's Disintegration between London Calling and Dick Dale? Public Enemy betweeen Portishead and Queens Of The Stone Age? Beastie Boys' Licensed To Ill between Pet Sounds and the White Album? My Bloody Valentine between MXPX and New York Dolls?
What can you drag up from your record shelf? BTW, Pixies are between Pink Floyd and Portishead, and Frank Black is between Big Star's Third/Sister Lovers and Black Sabbath's Paranoid, so go figure.

I need to get a new CD shelf unit...I have one of the more slim, 7 shelf units and I'm out of space. I have a somewhat "personal hierarchy" that I organize by..it goes:
Shelf 1 - All Nirvana Shelf 2 - Sonic Youth, Pixies, White Stripes (only 2 CDs) Shelf 3 - Radiohead, Weezer, Frank Black, Breeders Shelf 4 - Beach Boys, Mogwai, Wilco, Foo Fighters, Flipper, Man or Astroman...other random good bands Shelf 5 - Classic rock (Doors, Zeppelin, etc.) Shelf 6 - Sound tracks and other "eh" albums Shelf 7 - The "why the hell do I own these CDs?" shelf

I too am alphabetised. I would not be able to find anything if it were not so. A few juxtapositions:
Pixies between Pink Floyd and The Police
Frank Black between David Bowie and The Blue Aeroplanes
A couple more:
Grant Lee Buffalo between Grandaddy and Guided By Voices
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci between Goldfrapp and Robyn Hitchcock
I daren't go near my LP's (all 400 of them). I would start unearthing such artists as Half Man Half Biscuit, Sham 69, The Men They Couldn't Hang etc etc etc. Some of it is probably still OK but I am too frightened to find out. I have no turntable and it should probably stay that way. |

I think Swimmer's is the best yet, spine colour, ace. I probably would play around with mine more, but I'm frightened that I'd turn into John Cusack in High Fidelity. Plus I'm running out of space on my shelves which means space is at a premium and I would just confuse myself trying to rearrange. There again, it doesn't take much...

I arrange mine alphabetically by artist, and then chronologically within a particular artist/band's work.
Frank Black is between the Beatles and Blood, Sweat, and Tears. The Pixies are between Andy Partridge and the Posies. The first CD is Tori Amos' Under the Pink, and the last is the Young Fresh Fellows' Because We Hate You.

I do mine by genre (rock, jazz, classical, soundtrack/musicals - the last 2 being predominantly my wife's contributions) and then alphabetical within a genre.
Frank Black is between Belly and The Black Crows (ouch, I've tried to give away that CD)
Pixies between Liz Phair and The Pogues.
I think the B's are the strongest group on the shelf with The Beatles, Beck, Frank Black, David Bowie, Breeders, James Brown, and David Byrne. Only R might challenge. |

My two most represented letters are B (Barenaked Ladies, Beatles, Frank, BS&T, and Blur) and M (Erin McKeown, Minus Five, Monkees, Mono Puff, and Moxy Früvous).

My records are classified by genre and then alphabetically too. But alphabetically, it would go like this:
Frank Black between Björk and Blonde Redhead Pixies between Phoenix (yuck) and Plastikman (yay!) Breeders between Brassy and Buena Vista Social Club
Terry Hall between Guns n Roses and Hüsker Dü Charles Mingus between Jeff Mills and Kylie Minogue
