How about this:
Frank Black - Vocals, Guitars Lyle Workman - Guitars Joey Santiago - Guitars Dave McCaffrey - Bass Nick Vincent - Drums Eric Drew Feldman - Keyboard
I would pay double for a ticket to see this MEAN MUSIC MACHINE!

A FB line-up without Dave Philips would be a sin, IMHO!

Arrrgggh!
I like that lineup, but add Rich to it too eh?
True story, saw Frankus in Houston a couple of years back and Billy Gibbons (ZZ Topp) was standing right next to me, he was going off on Rich, really loved him, and the whole band.
Frank ate some of my pizza that night, hope he liked it, the show was GREAT!

although joey and lyle workman are great guitarists the line up he plays with at the moment (eric, daveP and McC, scott and rich) are as good as you will get. how many groups can get together and record shit hot albums to 2 track like them? very few... still would love to see lyle collaborating with them though because he is a fantastic guitarist.
i had so many problems.. and then i got me a walkman |

My fantasy lineup:
F.B. (da man) Rich + Lyle - lead guitars (both insanely good) Dave McCaffrey(bass and harmonies) Scott Boutier(or Nick Vincent)- drums Eric Feldman on keys They Might Be Giants- accordions/horns
...and maybe a string section? |

Last FB&C show I saw (Knitting Factory, Hollywood, last year) this WAS the line-up, by the last half-hour. Except Scott was drumming, and he was wearing a big fat wig. Still didn't look like Nick, though. Rich was away with Donnely I think. Can't remember if Eric was there, he often is at L.A. shows. Dave P was doing a whole lotta great guitar, than Lyle came on, then Joey! Of course the crowd was freaking and they launched Where is My Mind. Joey looked like a cat who had just been thrown on to the raucous stage from a nap. Joey was pretty disoriented as Lyle and Dave had hooked him up with a couple of those insane Menatone distortion pedals and I think it was Lyle's Orange or Green amp and a Les Paul and everytime Joey brought up the volume knob it shrieked and fed back wildly. Dave was covering Joey's lead line, one of the great Pixies themes of all time, but Joey got it together halfway through and got it going. It seemed like nobody informed poor Joe he would be playing that night. The stage was set and the momentum was underway for this line-up to try just about anything, and it was a rollicking good time until this pesky drunk young woman started grabbing Frank's mic stand to try to get his attention. It was annoying him, so the guy next to me grabbed her and pulled her away. Then she clawed her way back up front and grabbed the mic stand again, smacking our hero in the face pretty hard. Frank was pissed - he stepped back and thrust his arms downward at her, giving her the mighty finger from each hand. Then he waved the band off the stage and ended the show. Bummer. But at that point we had already achieved lift-off so most of us went home very happy. I think Eric was there, does anyone else remember that show? |

Oh yeah just wanted to add about Izzy's line-up - you gotta have Rich or Dave on hand for pedal steel. It's reached the point where a FB show without at least a little steel is like biscuits without gravy.
I do miss Lyle - that first Catholics album is a guitar inspiration for me. it always blows my mind, the guy is just a natural. Once when Lyle was 'special guesting' with Frank at McCabe's, FB actually asked Lyle, "So what's more fun, working with Beck or working with me?" Lyle avoided a direct response from what I remember, but the way Frank asked made it rhetorically obvious - it was clear to everyone there that it's gotta be plenty of fun working with FB. It's just that working with Beck could be better for your career. at least at the time...
On the other hand, I listened to Pistolero for the first time in a while the other day and Rich's playing is immensely satisfying in particular. I am very much looking forward to seeing what he's up to on this tour, having missed him last time. When I met him a few weeks back we got to talk quite a bit and I realized - I could learn *a lot* from this guy! |

both Lyle Workman and Rich Gilbert are sick guitarists, and they have defined a huge part of the Catholics sound in my opinion. Some of Lyle's lead work on Cult & self-titled makes me fucking giddy, I swear to god. and Rich makes Pistolero sizzle with energy.
Dave Philips is a good guitar player, but he has nothing on those other two dudes...at least from what I have witnessed (live and what not). |
