Hey Sean - thanks a bunch for joining the board and keeping us updated!

As per my regular habit, here's the text:

Frank Black & the Catholics: Revel in residency

Let the Frank Black watch commence on Queen Street next week as Francis and the Catholics take up a five-night residence at the 'Shoe. A newly built studio has his creative juices flowing, so Black will draw on a wealth of fresh material, including tracks from two new albums, Black Letter Days and Devil's Workshop (still another album, recorded then scrapped in August, should see daylight early next year). As for Frank sightings, keep an eye out for a fitter, happier Black, reaping the benefits of a gym regimen that's helped him drop 30 pounds. We caught up with the ex-Pixie on his cell as he traversed L.A. on the way to an apparently much-needed singing lesson.

You're a bit hoarse there, Frank.

Yeah, I was onstage with Gordon Gano [of the Violent Femmes] the other night. After I opened for him, I came out to do a song I sang on his record. I don't know what it was, but I just went completely nuts way more than I ever have in my life. I was diving all over the stage, rolling around. I was chewing on Gordon's shoes at one point, and I eventually happened to unplug his guitar. Anyway, I went mental and was screaming so loud during all this that I blew out my voice.

[Uh oh, here's that damned question again... DN]

Why two new separate albums and not one double album?

Two different sessions, two different sets of people, two different producers, so it was out of deference to the people on Black Letter Days, who were unavailable for Devil's Workshop. We had already accomplished our project, which was cutting a record, and the rest of us wanted to keep recording, but we didn't want to mix one session with the other. They're just two different vibes.

A similar question: you're playing five nights in a row at the Horseshoe. Why not one night in a bigger venue?

It makes a helluva lot more sense to play one show at a big venue, doing one night's work and moving on to the next town, but we like doing longer runs at the Horseshoe. They pay well, which is rare for a place that small, and we have the luxury of being in a city we like for more than one night. Another reason is that with Toronto being like the L.A. of Canada, I get to do a lot of promotion during the day. Also, it's the first stop on the tour, and it's a pub kind of atmosphere there, so we can have a glass of beer and be loose.

How are you going to spend your week here in Toronto?

Last time we went to a lot of music stores because our gear had just gotten ripped off and we were scrambling to buy new guitars. The drummer is very fond of those hot-dog vendors. As for me, Toronto's an urban place, so I do typical things like go to bookstores and stuff and just experience the bohemian lifestyle -- coffee, alcohol, food. I try to eat Greek when I'm there because Toronto has great Greek food.
