quote: Aside: I once lived up in Alaskan, which is filled with Libertarians. We once had a large wildfire that destroyed many homes and the evil Federal government arrived to give relief checks. Only problem was the Libertarians wanted the checks but they didn't want to sign anything because then the government would know where and who they are.
If they were TRUE Libertarians, wouldn't they not have accepted the checks at all?
For what it's worth, I agree that it isn't the place of government to ban smoking in independently owned businesses. And I say this as someone who doesn't smoke, thinks smoking is stupid and disgusting, and doesn't want to have to smell other people's smoke. I think the fact that there are automatic markets both for public places where people ARE allowed to smoke and public places where they're NOT pretty much guarantees that both are going to exist, even without the government interfering.

Until the government legislature rules that the tobacco industry is a mass-murderer and committing a federal offense on a massive scale, then the government controlling smoking in public and private places is completely absurd. Currently the laws are hypocritical, as the politicians want to please both the tobacco industry *and* the people who are against smoking for its obvious ill effects on their health. I am a smoker, and for what it's worth, I would like to be able to go into a bar or restaurant and smoke, but I also am mindful of nonsmokers, and try to avoid blowing my smoke in their direction, to the point that I will withhold having a cigarette if I am around too many nonsmokers. I also refuse to smoke around children and pregnant women. It's a lot easier to hold off now, though, because I am down to one a day for the most part. I don't expect or desire other smokers to behave the way I do at all, because it is our damn right to smoke, like it is our right to drink and do drugs - just not in a way that would harm others. There's the rub, because second hand smoke *is* harmful to others, but the federal laws don't read that way, do they? Round and round we go..... |

Carolynanna - I'm for equal access to the workplace. That being said, I think there has to be a real restriction of the oppt'y to get a job in an industry, rather than 1 specific place. For example, I think it OK that Hooters hires women and not 50% men as wait staff. There are plenty of other waiter jobs available in that industry that allows someone to get a job.
