I, personally, miss the golden days of Amphetamine Reptile, Touch and Go, and Skin Graft. Am I completely alone here? Jesus Lizard? Unsane? Hammerhead? Slint? Tar? The Didjits? Melvins even? The Cows?

Touch and Go still rocks, Quarterstick, et al. (ie. Calexico!!!!, Shipping News -though their newest release isn't all that great, Rachel's, Enon). More nostalgia for indie record co's- Slamdek Records:
http://www.slamdek.com/

Slint and Jesus Lizard are top bills on my list of best bands ever, had the great opportunity to see JL live, and the Melvins I saw at the Toy Tiger years ago in Louisville - they were insane and incredible. Saw The Cows open for Rev. Horton Heat in Louisville, too. One of the weirder shows I've seen. Something with a mannequin leg and self-pleasuring. They're great. Best seen live. Not familiar w/Unsane, Hammerhead or Tar.
There's still Dischord Records, too - don't know if you like any of their bands?:

If you're sad for the old days of indie music labels, I hear that - I found a good resource for music though, and there's quite a bit of good stuff still kickin'. Try doing a search on any of the bands you mentioned at this site:
www.epitonic.com

There's really good summarized and cross-referenced backround info and related bands/sound links to the right. Also if you register (free) you get free mp3 downloads. FWIW, I highly recommend it.

The Cows with The Jesus Lizard is easily one of the best shows I ever saw. Shannon from the Cows has a very good new band called The Heroine Sheiks which also has a couple of guys from the Swans if Im correct. Hammerhead was incredible as well, from Amrep too. Two thirds of them are in a fantastic new band called Vaz. Tar's best stuff is on Touch and Go, an unbelievably missed band. Unsane was best before their original drummer died and they were on Matador, who won't touch anything that sounds like that anymore, because...well, they're sissies. Yep, I said it. The most overlooked band of Matador ever though is Come. Any Catholics fans should find out about them, they are very similar, very western kind of rock. I love em.

Thanks for the links apl4eris, I'll check em out.

As a footnote to being dissatisfied with "indy" rock, yes, I miss those days and those types of bands. Today's "indy" rock is right back to the half assed fashion oriented bullshit that the whole indy world used to rail against. Am I the only one that's sick of sleeve tattoos, vespas, big ass hoop earrings, and those Beatles hairdos?

Now that is some great, scarey, make your head ring music! I love it.

hey apl4eris,
did you ever go to or remember a place called 'dreamers'
in chicago? -i saw jesus lizard there shortly before they closed the place
-was i halucinating or does david yow 'hold himself' during performances?
i used to see those guys at the jewel..
saw butthole surfers there two nights in a row and they literally almost
set the place on fire the second night -Gibby was squirting lighter fluid on
the drum kit, lit it and was keeping it lit while hitting the head with a drumstick
-the lit fluid would flame up and scorch the ceiling.
i had a really nasty vision of the place going up and trying to get out in one piece...

Sounds like an inccredible show! I'm surprised they allowed any fire there at all - considering Chicago's absolute fear and loathing of anything pyrotechnic or even luke-warm... No, I didn't ever catch Jesus Lizard in Chicago - it was in Louisville. I wish I could have seen more of them. You bet Yow is a freakin wacko. People I know saw him do all sorts of things w/"himself". My husband was at a show when someone in the audience threw a shoe at him, and he peed in it and drank it, then threw it back. At least I'm pretty sure it was Yow/JL, now I'm wondering if it might have been Mr. Bungle/Mike Patton - doesn't matter, though, they are equally derranged. Real nutcase, but the best rock-n-roll. Do you ever go to shows at the Hideout, Empty Bottle, Elbo Room or the Liars Club? We never made it to those venues, and I imagine we will try to on visits someday soon. I see a lot of great shows going on in Chicago right now listed in the Reader - darn lucky dog, you!!

Sorry for a little off-topic rant there interloper - Do you get to catch any good live shows where you live? All we got here in Columbus is Little Brother's, Scully's and the Newport.

Not at all....As chance would have it, Im about an hour south from you in the town that gave the world aviation, and gbv, that should give it away. The last decent show I saw was Frank in Cincy. I did however see the best Jesus Lizard show of my life at little brothers when it was still Stache's....I haven't heard arab on radar but Ive seen the name a bunch of times. Sounds like it needs to be checked out. Thanks for the tip.
