It was all by accident for myself...A friend had recorded me a compilation tape which had Pixies 'levitate me' slammed between the specials and sonic youth 3years ago. That was the only song that struck out, so i requested more...Then it just all took off, EVERY song was amazing from start to finish. I now dont find the same effect of any other band. I heard Frank blacks solo work soon after...Its all just still so great.

it usually makes steam leak out of my ears when i try to come with a relative equal in all respects. i mean here's an artist who really does nothing different other than shine really bright at what he does. when he does a cliche it's usually got a quality that seems to take it above the original. when he goes original -it seems classic. the wierdest thing is that later on when a history is written of the tableau of rock -this guy is going to really stand out. -can you see rob zombie or the screamdorks (insert any alt. band name here) of the month band having that staying power? anyway i think i was within a week's time exposed to here comes your man, thru radio and the video on MTV. that sent me right down to the record shop. (1989). -it was unfortunate that i was not on the hip tip at that time because their sold out metro show in chicago was already that (sold out) and i think it was one of those things where when it dawned on me that this was hot stuff and i should check for concerts it was actually going on like that night. oh well, it's been a definite snowball since then as i remember not being too crazy about the catholics thing at first -but it has turned out to be a great thing.

Like blarg, I first got an inkling via one late night session watching MTV and seeing the 'Here Comes You Man' video. Unlike blarg, I didn't rush out to buy anything anytime soon - at that time, I was still in junior high and content to just admire the 'weird' stuff MTV showed late at night, unknowing that they were just showing a fraction of a whole new world of music for me to discover. A few years later in 91, I managed to tune in left of the dial to MSU's campus radio - no small feat considering I had a dozen wires coming out of my radio and tacked to the ceiling just to get semi-crappy reception. I stuck blank tapes in and taped everything that radio station played for a week. I couldn't believe all the strange and beautiful noises that station made. Trompe le Monde had been out for some time, and because quite a few songs from it got played, I finally hauled my ass to the store and bought it. I even brought it in when it was my day to select the music we'd listen to in my high school art class (every student got a turn to choose what we'd listen to whilst being creative) - people were stunned into silence. I mean for 40 minutes, you couldn't hear a damn thing but Frank screaming and grunting his way through that fabulous record My teacher's only comment afterwards was "Eh, that was...interesting" The rest, as they say, is history. The Pixies broke up shortly after I started liking them (bummer), but I did pick up Frank's first solo album the day it came out. It was amazing - one of the few discs I've ever instantly loved and put on repeat. Normally, I have to warm up to a set of tunes. That's when I thought, "meh, who needs the Pixies anyway?"

hasn't this been covered recently? At least, Pixies has... As for FB, I went the illegal route. I borrowed FB, Teenager, and Catholics first album from the library (under the pretence of research) and ripped them. Its snowballed from there really

Well, I was (and still am) a big They Might Be Giants fan, and I had heard about the TMBG/Frank connections, so I thought I'd check out Frank's music. I bought a used copy of TotY late in 1999. I think the first song that really caught my attention was "Pie In The Sky." Overall, the album took some time to grow on me, but I eventually started to love it. That's been pretty much my reaction to most of Frank's albums.

I bought Bossanova used on a whim. I had heard of the Pixies but for some reason I always assumed they were from the 70's, and back then I had a bias against "older music" (young and stupid). When I found out they started in the late 80's, I checked 'em out. |

Bought Doolittle first, then Bossanova, then went to see them live at Brixton Academy june 26th 1991, then bought , TLM & Surfa Rosa..........rest is history. Lost touch until TOTY then got hold of FB and the rest as either they cam out or I could get hold of them.
Didn't catch FB live again till this year - living in SW Ireland! Complete addict now with over 40 CD's and 30 odd bootlegs of FB alone (don't know how much Pixies stuff there is).
Could be worse - could be a Pet Shop Boys addict - although I think this is a rare condition, limited to knobheads.

Way back in the summer of ´96 I was at the Hultsfred festival in the south of Sweden. One night I had a little too much to drink, and I felt really sick. So I decided to go and throw up a little - just to take the edge of the horrible buzz (could have been the haschish, don´t know). Well I found a good ´throwing up place´ behind a fence by the VIP area. I went through with the intestinal excercise and went back to my friends. FB and the C´s were playing that same night and we went to check them out. The man himself (Frank Black of course) entered the stage but with an ill favored look on his face. He spoke to the crowd about some guy who had thrown up all over his brand new alligator skin cowboy boots. It turned out he had left the boots to dry (the man seems to have some serious foot issues) right by the fence where I threw up. Me, in my drunken state, had spewed all over the great man´s boots....NOT. Got a tape from a friend and I really liked it. |
