if you were trying to introduce someone to the wonders of Frank Black, what one album would you lend to them/tell them to buy? if it were a situation where they could only hear one song, what song would it be?

notice this is different from your favorite song/album, or the best song/album. it's about which one you could present to someone in order to give them a decent idea of what Frank Black is all about.

Well, I'd have to divide this into solo-era and Catholics-era...

solo = FB self-titled

Catholics = Dog in the Sand

These are not my favorites of each era but, like you said, what I consider to be the best intro-type albums.

If i had to pick one OVERALL (accounting for both eras), I would have it be Teenager of the Year.

I might be inclined to agree with you. I heard that one and right away, I was sold.

The first solo album does for me, if a single song "I heard ramona sing" allways.

The album I'd go for would be Teenager of the Year. Not sure about one song that I'd choose, but "Bullet" comes to mind as a possibility.

DitS was my first FB&tC's album and I think that was a good thing.

I think it's best to introduce them to the twangy Catholics first. People might be more open to it that way than if they got used to his keyboardy Teenager music. I bet there are a tone of Pixies fans out there that we never hear from because they can't stand FB&tCs.

Definetely "Teenager is the best album" of FB solo

With the catholics I'd say "Show me your tears", much better (for me) than "Dog in the sand". Much more complete...

baby, that's art

New House of the Pope

Where is my mind?

Anything with the word "fuck" or a modifier of it.

But for me it depends on the person. I should work for him, I am good at selling shit, but only shit that isn't shitty.

You'd have to separate solo and Catholics stuff, they're just so different. For solo, go with Fu Manchu or Los Angeles (and I still reckon s/t is better than Teenager). With the Catholics, its harder to say as i don't have all the albums (I know, I know, but I'm poor! I'm a student!) The new album is fantastic, though, perhaps Everything is New, or better still I Need Peace.

I think SMYT and the first FB solo are the most accessible, as far as first time listens go. However, Teenager of the Year is pure genius. If they have "good ears" that could be the best way to go .. depends on who you're turning on to FB I guess.

I would have to agree with Psychic Twin’s post above about dividing the Solo era & Catholics era:

Solo: Teenager of the Year

Catholics: Show Me Your Tears

If I absolutely had to choose one song it would be “Calistan” from Teenager. It has that amazing beat that drove so many of his earlier tunes while hinting at the country influence with the Catholics.

I'd go for his 1st two solo efforts. Cult Of Ray turned me away from Frank. And then on friday I bought SMYT and rediscoverd how much I like Frank Black.

i'm just echoing what has already been said, but TOTY and Superbound gets my vote "I'm bored of the valleys, I'm bored of the peaks!" fantastic song, love the way it starts slow and then is so fast and catchy! Actually my friend saw FB the other week and I've promised to make her 2 FB CD's, one of his 'early' stuff and one of his Catholics stuff (as it sounds weird putting those together on one CD, unless you do it in some kind of order - not to mention the volume seems different)... I've tried to start with the catchy songs, CD 1 starts with Headache then Superbound (then Los Angeles I think), CD 2 starts with Billy Radcliffe (heard the John Peel version, love the way he sings that!) then Massif Centrale.
