This is lifted from a fan's question and answer section on the They Might Be Giants mailing list, sent out today:
From Erik B. Q: Imagine my surprise when I found out you guys toured with Frank Black and I missed it. Any future plans involving him?
and the mighty Flansburgh's response:
We just heard that there is going to be a Pixies reunion, so he's probably tied up, but we are big fans of Mr. Black. He's one of the few true originals.
Nothing is ever something. |

I bet a few people on here have the radio show cd where Frank and TMBG played together and did eachother's songs and called themselves "The Might Be Black"
I know I do. |

Yes. I have heard another "special night" with the two bands. Sounded amazing. The two Johns speak highly of Frank in the movie Gigantic and Frank has a few things to say about them. All very friendly. Except Frank did not like the album Flood much at first listen. Now thinks it is one of his favourites.

I believe Flansburgh directed Frank's Los Angeles video as well. At least, I think the mighty Johns pointed that fact out when they hosted 120 Minutes one night long ago.
Unfortunately, I missed the tour they did together, too. I was aware of it, I was just a *very* poor college student at the time ;) I've seen them both on separate occassions, however. Oh what fun.
Another project the two did together was when the Johns had the Hello Recording Club going. There never were many members of that club, if I remember right - a few thousand maybe - but we were lucky enough to get a CD of the Month. The first year the club was going, Frank offered up a 4 song disc through the club. It included stark yet nifty versions of Calistan and Space Is Gonna Do Me Good which would later appear in beefed up versions on Teenager of the Year.
It's great stuff if anyone else out there is lucky enough to have jumped on that club when they had the chance. There was actually tons of fantastic, rare stuff released through it. I wish the Johns would start it up again *and* have Frank contribute more stuff :)

and of course linnell played on frank's first solo album (can't remember which songs, at the moment)
i've heard some mp3s from the the tmbg/black tour, but i could never tell if they were playing together or just alternating from one band to the other. are there any where they actually sing each other's songs? if so, which ones? on the stuff i heard, i couldn't tell any difference.

They toured together with Frank Black doing a Solo Acoustic set. What I remember about the FB set it was that it seemed like it was half requests from the audience which was very cool. Also, he would play 2 or 3 songs on a guitar and then swing it around behind him. By the end of the set he was wearing 5 or 6 guitars :)
Andy K. PS: Looking at my ticket, Frente! were also on the bill. Woo-hoo :(

Yes,John Flansburgh did direct the video for "Los Angeles", I am positive on that. Back when Frank was touring to support "Teenager of the Year", I was lucky enough to have a chat with THE MAN himself on piloting that hover-craft sort of vehicle he used in that video. One of my best days, ever!!!!! |

ahh, the mysteries of Frank's pre-catholics touring career...how is it that in '94 anyone was requesting anything other than Pixies songs? or was he playing covers?

Flans also directed the "Hang On To Your Ego" video. FB&Cs & TMBG should do a split 7" covering old pop songs. |

I saw the TMBG/Frank tour in St. Louis and the crowd talked all through Frank's set. It was really annoying b/c he was just playing acoustic. No pixies stuff just songs from the first Frank Black. |

Just to clarify, the crow talking was anooying, not Frank's playing...
