I've noticed that on this current tour there is an absence of new (yet to be recorded) material + no real hint from the man himself about what he is up to as regards writing. This is not a moan. It may be that Frank is in the middle of a well earned creative rest. Or could it be that Frank's song writing of late is geared towards another project - A new Pixies album perchance? Or a solo offering?

Of course, like I said it may be a well earned break, but he is such a prolific writer that i can't but help wonder

I'm with brackish girl on this one
He just made a record.
I'm not sure I understand this topic the good way But, He chooses not to play new songs on this tour That doesn't have to mean he didn't write 100 new songs

I'll bet when he next tours the US (which he hopefully will on this tour) you'll start to see some new songs cropping up in the setlist. |

WELL...when he toured last fall, he was playing Manitoba and Nadine....it does seem kinda odd that there wouldnt be any new (yet to be released) tunes. The black sessions attest to that (he plays Men In Black and Oddballs [1994]). Over the last ten years, he has pretty much played unreleased stuff while on tour....until now. Maybe he could test some of his new Pixies songs. He He He. |

"Men in Black" and "Oddballs" actually had been released in 1994. They were both "Headache" b-sides.
The temp drummer in the band right now may be a factor in this thread's question. Maybe? |

Someone said that he played a new song at the Liverpool show in a thread on the Frank Black Live board, but that it might have been a song they just didn't recognize. I'm hoping for some new stuff if he does an US tour in the near future, I'm curious as to where his sound is going to go, but honestly I'm overjoyed just to SMYT and old stuff.

Don't ever read into anything he may or may not do. It is always the opposite! A new Pixies' album? Perhaps. Another year long North American tour with the Catholics? Most definately maybe! Who knows? Just enjoy. But keep pressuring him to do what we wnat! That's the trick!

Here's my logical path..
He's always writing. That's a given.
He's not playing new songs.
But we know he's writing.
Thus, there's a reason he's writing songs, but not playing the with the Catholics....
Anyone else wanna fill in the blank? |

Cause you want to promote one new record at a time, except, I suppose, in the case of a double release. :)

Fare Thee Well isn't a FB original But he never played it before and isn't recorded
Here's your so called new song
I hope you don't see it as a sign: ''WHAT, OK HE DID PLAY A NEW SONG, BUT IT WAS A COVER. FRANK BLACK STOPPED WRITING, HE HAS BECOME A COVER ARTIST. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!''
that would be insane

a) he's been playing "don't clip your wings" solo which is apparently a SMYT outtake, just like he was playing "21 reasons" right after DITS - i guess that's a "new song" - ditto for his cover of "fare thee well" b) he's been playing mainly with a sub drummer, who would have no real reason to learn new songs. i assume the band gave joe kidd a list of a certain ammount of their backcatalog to learn and he did just that - but i see no reason for them to teach him all new stuff just for a short tour c) it seems to me like FB is more serious about this record than the last few - maybe he's really trying to feature the songs live to boost sales/acceptance of the record
just my 3 cents

Maybe just a hair-brained theory, but he is probably spending a lot more time dealing with personal issues these days as well. Major life crises certainly can have an effect on your "free" time... Just a thought?
When Buckminster Fuller came to Canada, he kept asking the same question: "Have you ever really considered how much your buildings actually weigh?" --"The Big Top." |
