I was reading the 'Strokes' thread, and it got me thinking that there is another group out there that is getting a little too much praise....the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, don't get me wrong, they are alright to listen to, just not what they have been hyped up to be. I find it to be just a logical (and not as original as widely touted by many) extension of Boss Hogg, Pussy Galore and JSBX....I think their album is actually produced by a guy from Boss Hogg. I just feel a bit sad that this newer 'scene' which includes the Strokes, Interpol, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, and the Y.Y.Y.'s isn't all its cracked up to be. All in all, they just make me want to go back and listen to the real thing...Pere Ubu, Captain Beefheart, Ramones, Velvet Underground, The Stooges, Joy Division, Husker Du and all the other groups from which they borrow heavily.
What do any of you think....and have you had this similar reaction; where half way thru a song of any of the first mentioned groups, an arrangement, or style or sound makes you think....hmmm...sounds sort of like ""...I think I'll put that on instead. |

i agree.. although i think among all these re-hash groups.. Interpol is probalby doing the best job.. yes, it's rehashing (as many have said) but they sound pretty good to me.
yeah yeah yeah's don't to it enough for me to make me want to buy the album. but the lead singer is pretty cute |

They have been hyped to high heaven but i do think that they are a really good band, unlike the other bands you mentioned which are distinctly average, especially the Strokes, they really get on my tits! |

I didn't think the Yeah Yeah Yeahs would be that great after reading all their constant hype in Rolling Stone, but I ate my words when I heard their album...it's good stuff.

I think it was hit on the head with the Boss Hog reference. That's what I thought as well. I was thinking Boss Hog and Black Flag almost. Positively boring. What seperates good bands from ones that won't last is whether or not they can successfully distill all of their favorite bands into their own thing. When it's too obvious, it doesn't seem as genuine. |
