I've seen quite a few Zhang Yimou films, which is not surprising seeing as I live in Beijing and he is very very famous here. I recently visited (as in yesterday) a place which was in the film 'Hero.' Hero is by no means his best work though, if you can get hold of it then watch a film called 'Lifetimes' or 'Farewell my Concubine.' Lifetimes is possibly one of my favorite films, it's a depressing film about a family living through the Cultural Revolution in China.
You can buy the film collection of Zhang Yimou for about 10 dollars here so I'll have to look out for that as I do like his films.
Who's the man that won't cop out when there's danger all about? |

COOL...'lifetimes' is called 'to live' here in north america....and Zhang Yimou was cinematographer for 'farewell my concubine' directed by Chen Kaige. I think my favorite Zhang films are 'The story of Quiu ju' 'To Live' but you are right....extremely depressing. Did you (or anyone) see his film 'Not One Less'.....wow. |

"Not One Less" was wonderful and captivating. The fact that it was based on a true story made it even more so. I will look for "The Story of Quiu Ju" now. "Hero", or "Ying xiong", sounds interesting, but I hope that it does not follow in the line of "Crouching Tiger..." I am so tired of seeing this and "The Matrix" copied in every kind of action movie. It's getting sickeningly absurd.

"To Live" is excellent, but I also enjoyed his less revered "Happy Times" He's been a good antidote to my "Kurosawa isn't making any more movies cause he's dead" problem.

I was really sad when he passed - I cried about it, especially when I rented "Madadayo" soon after.

Confucius say: apl has no life.
I am in a writer's/artist's block/rut/what have you. It ain't purty, not in the least. Husband's had a scary headache for 3 months, hospital crap, doctors, acupuncture, inconclusive spinal taps and MRIs and crap. Plus we only have one car and we live out in the country and I can't go anywhere. ugh. Thus, no life...God, what got me started on the story of my pathetic life these days? Oh yeah. I guess that's why it seems like I have a lot to say. Sorry, this is like when you pass somebody in the hall and ask them, "How are you?" and they tell you all about their goiter...
