blarg - awesome that you saw Husker Du. I was way late catching that train I have to say, it must be a Bob thing, the loudness - because Sugar shows were intense on many levels including volume. I usually like to hang out near the stage for most shows, but for both Sugar shows I went to, I stood back - waaaay back It was awesome, but so very loud. Solo, he's a lot tamer, probably due to lack of a backing band most times out. It's all good, I guess.
Shamefully, I haven't seen Frank live since early 1996, so I've never seen him with the Catholics. But yeah, that is rude of people to be yelling for ex-Pixies members on a Catholics tour. Ouch. Though Joey did play onstage with Frank in the first tour at least, if you're going to see Frank Black and the Catholics, you should expect to see, erm, the Catholics! On a somewhat similar note, I used to get annoyed at people who just got excited for the 'single'...you know, there's always a crowd there that stand around looking bored/bewildered until the one semi-successful song gets played and then they go apeshit. Now, I just shrug it off, though I thought it was useless to go see bands that tend to be 'cult faves' and only know one or two singles. But now I realize - maybe they had free tickets, or decided begrudgingly to come along with a fanatic friend thinking "what the hell, I know 'song x'" heh heh.
I do remember the first time I saw Bob Mould do his one man acoustic show, something kinda similar happened. At one point, he played the Hu Du classic Celebrated Summer, and a group in the crowd that were like what I just described above, clapped when the song went quiet thinking it was over. Anyone who knows that song, knows that it quiets to a whisper a few times before concluding. Bob looked a bit miffed, and the more seasoned fans kinda shot them looks that said, 'it's not over yet!' *sigh* But then, years later, I realized I was just being an elitist fan-girl prick, and I've lightened up. I don't even care about that stuff any more.
Thus concludes more meandering mubblings by yers truly.

just wanted to note that as of this year the Breeders were regularly playing "Gigantic"...and in May Malkmus & Jicks did a set of all Pavement, in chronological order.

earlier, I think someone made a comment saying that one wouldn't expect Kim Deal to break out into "Gigantic" on a Breeders tour, as if making a case for Frank to lay off Pixies tunes at his own shows...well, apparently, she does. I'd guess that's what anazgnos is talking about. The Malkmus/Pavement thing was likely just a bonus example.

I think Purrsia got it most accurate: people thought that when the Pixies split they'd never get a chance to hear the songs live again, so they go understandably mental (they are pretty good). However, the new songs got some of the best reception in London, Massif Centrale especially.

at lollapalooza the 'last splash' breeders were up and they started their hit 'canonball' and about 20 seconds into it Kim had accidently unplugged her miked guitar -a funny moment really because as you were saying (purssia)that was their big hit and the frenzy was all whipped up and then -blap! they did a great job of picking it up though -Kim had the hugest red-faced grin.

They didn't play Massif Centrale at the Astoria, numnuts! Unless they did, in which case I feel stupid. Or you're talking about a different gig, in which case I feel stupid. Looks like I'm going to end up with egg on my face.
I've noticed that people go more mad for solo/Catholics tunes than they used to - it's almost even stevens between the mayhem released when Velouria splits the air and the mayhem released for Hermaphroditos or Headache. So there.

I think it depends on how old you are. I started listening to the Pixies in 92 and I was 17/18. It was a pretty cool summer all around, its a nostalgia thing. |

Yeah, they definitely did play it. It was the first SMYT track (I think, may have been The Snake) that they played, and got the first surfer. Please use free range eggs for your face, think of the chickens...

Uh, Massif Centrale? That's the one where he sounds like Jimmy Sommerville? Yeah they did play that. I was mixed up with Manitoba. Which they didn't play.
