So you guys must be at the gig now, I guess Beijing is 12 hours in front of you so you'll will be on 29th Oct jumping around and thoroughly enjoying yourself (probably pissed up), and I'm sat here (30th Nov) freezing my balls off and dreading having to go to work in an hour. Shit!
Let us know the setlist and how it went asap. |

Thats weird, I have heard that in countries other than Britain bands come on late and play into the early hours... for example, at some festivals The Cure have gone on at midnight, and even as late as 1:00am... but bands just play from 9:00pm - 11:00pm in Britain. Probably down to our fucked up alcohol licensing laws. |

Thanks for the concern and everything.. I had to work today, then it was off to the airport. Now I'm back.
Ok... So I'm not much of one for writing long notes and shit, but here I go. Frank played two sets: the first was mostly older stuff - all rock with the telecaster. The second was mostly acoustic stuff - a combination of DITS and the new albums. The encore was quite long with about seven new songs.
First set:
Opened with freedom rock (yes guy). The entire band was wearing suits, and Frank was all black yet again. Some songs I 'clearly' remember (because I didn't want to take notes the whole time, etc..) : Men in Black (!), So. Bay, Wave, Black letter days, Gouge away, I want rock and roll (the solo was SICK), and a wack of other tunes... He played a new 'hard rock' song that was absolutely killer. This was the best set of the night, at least for me.
Seconed set began after a twenty minute break. Ran into Dave P in the pisser, and I asked him to keep the rock coming. He said it wasn't his call, and that it was completely up to Frank. Frank lost the suit and was wearing a beaten down "ameoba music" shirt.. The rest of the band, except for Rich, losened their ties etc.. Frank made fun of the people who missed the first set. Then he went on to talk about how "the slower song rock even more than the faster stuff".. Something about getting old and shit. There was a funny bit when Frank was talking about this topic and was looking at Dave M for support, and he just said "yes, Master". I laughed.
This was the longest set of the night by far.. Probably over an hour. Great selection of tunes. Again, highlights: Robert Onion, Chip Away boy, Southbound Bevy, California bound, 85 weeks, All my ghosts, 666, Black Rider, Cold Heart of stone, Jane, Out of State, Bartholomew, Heloise, Whiskey, Bullet (!), I'll be blue, etc.. etc.. There were a lot more, but it's tough with that many kickass songs one after another. Really cool bit- He played Monkey gone to heaven, but it was just him and the two pedal steel guitars. Beautiful. I can't remember what he opened with, but Black Rider was the closer (the first version from BLD of course).
The Encore was alright.. He told the crowd that they could leave if they want to, cuz they need the practise before the rest of the tour. Joking of course (at least I hope). They played another 7 or 8 songs. One or two were new. All I'm sure of is Velvety, and the final song was John the Revelator.
I was surprised that he played so many new songs (4 or 5 I think). "Manitoba" was one he dedicated to the crowd. really cool. Show started right on time at 10:20, and ended at 12:40 or so. Total of about 2hrs of solid music. Seems like the rest of the tour is going to rock for all you lucky people going to check it out. I'll be back at the Horseshoe on Thursday (tomorrow) for a Halloween show. Should be another entertaining night. I hope Frank gets drunk on stage and plays Thalassocracy, I switched you and Parry the wind back to back. Last thing.. The digital camera I borrowed wasn't really working for me (and I wanted to just watch the show anyways). BUT. I did get a 30 second video clip of So. Bay. I'll find somewhere to post it soon..
cheers, 1c |
