I'm gonna play it for my mom this weekend. She's a big fan of all his covers but strangely enough not so much a fan of his original material. I have a hunch she'll like this album because it's rather calm and he's sing-songy on it as opposed to some of his other albums which can, on first listen, sometimes sound a bit off key in parts. I'll let y'all know what she thinks.

My dad recently said "I don't like music" (although when I told him that last night he said he must have been having a "geezer moment") but when I played him SMYT he said "I might like this!"

My mom got me into Radiohead and she was a fan of Coldplay before they ever blew up in the US...you can't get much cooler than that.

I gave my pops Dog In The Sand. he seemed to have dug it a great deal. Also, when I first got "Black Letter Days" he was listening to it when I gave it its first spin. He said something like "this Black guy is alright!"

My mom's favourite band in the world is Frank Black & The Catholics. She's cool, gets into lots of the music that I like. I think she might have had more fun than me when we saw them!

My mom asked for a copy of SMYT, TOTY, and the Orange album for her birthday. Yesterday I caught her singing "Big Red". It doesn't get any cooler than that.

I haven't played SMYT for anyone yet but when I played DITS a forty-something guy thought it could be the Rolling Stones. Then on another job another "old-timer" thought BLD sounded like Neil Young.

Sure we do, jb! It's one of my favorite words. It's what I like to imagine me and my husband turning out to be when we get old, that and "ornery" and "crotchety"! I figure - ehh, we'll have earned it!

We're both old enough to be parents - I'm 30 and he's 29, and we love Frank Black. Hard to say whether it's just because we've been into him since the Pixies, or purely on the current music's merits (ye ol' Nature/Nurture question I guess), though I tend to believe it's definitely based on the current music's merits. My hubby's folks really like em -though they haven't heard SMYT yet. But they're just damn cool anyway.
I'm still trying to decide if I like SMYT - there are a few songs I like fairly well that are still growing on me, eg. Snake, New House of the Pope, When Will Happiness Find Me Again, huh - now that I think about it, I like most of the album now, only a few songs rub me the wrong way, and I will keep drilling them into my head trying to learn to like them. It's just he sounds so tired sometimes - the singing has lost a lot of energy. Probably because of the sadness. Wow, I'm really glad I finally like this album! I was so sad I might not like it. Whew! - FB just does this to me every time!

my friends dad made him burn teenager of the year for his dads car, he apparently listens to it all the time. i havent really gotten my parents to warm up to him. my mom HATED yankee hotel foxtrot, but she really liked uncle tupelo, so i guess theres some hope for frank.

Y'all must have some relatively youthful (40s-50s) parents. My mother was born in 1926, but she has at least conceded that Frank sounds pretty good to her and "certainly much better than that damned David Matthews that your sister is so fond of. I can't tell what he's sayin', and it all sounds the same."

My brother is 44, and I'm giving him a bunch of FB&TC for his birthday in a month or so here. I have no doubt that he'll love it, if I can just steer him away from his current White Stripes obsession.

Yeah, I was kind of a surprise, and my mother got started kind of late anyway. (My sister says I was a "mistake." My mother says I was a "gift." Depends on who you ask, I guess.) She's way cool, though. She'll drink tequila with you & she has a great sense of humor.

Ok well I played SMYT for my mom and she didn't like it. She always says, "his music is good but he needs to get a better singer b/c he just can't sing." I say if they got another singer there would be no band!! GAH! Anyway she did like Horrible Day, she's a bit of a pessimist.

my mom likes the five blind boys of alabama

but my dad bought me my first Pixies and GBV albums
he bought them for himself actually
but he has so much records, they were gaining dust
so he said

listen to this my child

and that's how I become the ultra cool person I am

my dad did that same thing with my brother
he had a jon spencer blues explosion record
and gave it to my brother

and that's how my brother became a pharmacist
a farmacist, that's right, a pharmacist who likes jon spencer

my mom likes, as my dad puts it, "limp dick rock" like james taylor and seals and croft. my dad is big into jazz (mainly charlie parker lately). but as a kid they played me the best stuff i think i could've heard at that age. when i was in 1st grade my favorite bands were the beatles, the beach boys and the kinks. my parents also played me CCR, blue cheer, frank zappa and sly and the family stone. so even if my parents don't like FB (or really anything new i like), when i was growing up, they fed me well musically
