If Manchester was slightly disappointing then this was the exact opposite. When they rock out there are just two words to describe them ..... ...... insert your own superlatives you know what they are like. The setlist seemed to be better set out with all the slower songs at the beggining and when they played the 3 pixies songs in a row everything after that was fantastic. This time we got a 5 track encore and closed the night with where is my mind? Still very very little crowd interaction but Im sure I would complain if he had cut a couple of songs out of the set to talk. I can't properly remember the setlist now lots has happened in between, like having someone break into my car steal my brand new trainers and break off my steering wheel leaving me stranded in Sheffield, it was roughly the same as Manchester but give or take about 8-10 songs.
Very Very Good 8.5/10 |

Indeed it was,I was quite lucky though coz I had alot of other more expensive stuff in the boot. According to my AA sheet I parked on Sidney Street car park which was about 5min from the Leadmill. The car park was full as well. Only my piece of shit car got touched. Twice in a year now. Lucky me. |

Review by Vic Allen, the link is:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/southyorkshire/music/2003/10/frankblack.shtml
What a surprise, though - it seems as if you should brace yourself to listen to Frank Black and the Catholics when you go to see Frank Black and the Catholics:
It's 10 years since Black Francis decided to break up the Pixies and go it alone.
He wanted to move away from the pop genius formula that, true, had brought the band international superstardom but had also effectively signalled a positive burn out between the groups members.
So Francis decided to change his name for a second time and the solo alias adopted was Frank Black.
Since his reincarnation Black has released eight solo albums, most of which have featured his 'backing' band The Catholics.
Frank Black - drowning in sound? The two outfits are now synonymous with the other and with each lavish production the group as a whole have drifted away from the cult guitar assaults and vocal drills Pixie land and instead steered towards a more traditional US sound.
This bi-annual album tour brought in a mighty fine crowd to the Leadmill of all shapes and sizes, and with the recent release of latest offering 'Show Me Your Tears' sustaining its initial popularity with the English faithfuls this was always set to be a glorious continuation of Black's continuing musical journey.
Seraphic were an obvious choice for a support act. Pixie in sound and style they proved competent and kooky enough to get the crowd going and are testament to the fact that the early 90's era still has a deep bass or two to throw at the indie scene yet.
The new term brought a throng of students who had relived Doolittle and Surfer Rosa over the summer - but this was a Black & Catholics promo tour. - Vic Allen Life became slightly more complicated however when Black arrived on stage. It seems that the new term brought a throng of students who had relived the airs and aspirations of Doolittle and Surfer Rosa over the summer - but this was a Black & Catholics promo tour. They were out to show the world their new material.
So when Black belted out the first few lines of his most recent compositions there was not a murmur to be heard. His trademark mismatched falsetto greeted the crowd, but the strummed accompaniments only seemed to bewilder many.
There were the genuine Frank Black followers who had savoured every word of Dog In The Sand and Black Letter Days and appreciated wholly the move towards an acoustic sound, but there were also those that appeared to openly dislike the genre.
Frank Black Although I had been prepared for Black's newest offerings, the Pixie die-hards old or new most certainly weren't. Many seemed disappointed.
Standout tracks from the current album such as 'Nadine' proved worthwhile, but the obvious Dylan references on 'New House of the Pope' seemed that obscure that some members of the crowd even heckled, claiming that he was 'More Tori Amos than Amos herself'.
So this was indeed an insight, and maybe a lesson for some. Black was great, but be warned. His excellent new accomplished set is fine if you love Frank and his Catholics but if you want to relive the heady days of the Pixie sensation then Record Collector, or the night's support, are your best options.

New House of the Pope is clearly Leonard Cohen, not Tori Anus. |

I never heard any heckling at the Leadmill. Maybe this was just a fabrication to support the author's viewpoint. Or maybe, as I was down the front, I couldn't hear the idiots, too consumed as I was in the genius which is Frank Black.
