Steve Martin makes these guitars, right?
Just kidding. I need an acoustic guitar and I was looking at this Martin today. The model is DX1. It's one of the "lower-quality" Martin's but it sounds REALLY full and it projects like a mofo.
Does anyone else here have a Martin? I think this one is about 475. So I guess I'm asking if any of you have had experiences with the inexpensive Martin guitars. I'm not spending anymore than 500 for an acoustic, so don't suggest I should get a $2000 Taylor.

I would LOVE to have a Martin. I'v never even beheld one in person, let alone played one, but all I hear is good things. I suppose that wasn't very helpful....

Play as many as you can in your price range. The 'magic' one will hit you. I found my acoustic (Seagull)this way...
Try different woods, etc, you'll find the sound you're looking for, then try a bunch of guitars with that wood/build, and you'll start to notice some sound and play better than others...i'd prioritize playing over sound..the sound will always improve, but the playing you're stuck with.
Just my opinion tho! |

I have a Martin 000-15 that I bought new 2-1/2 years ago. The 15 series are lower-priced and all mahogany, but still made in Nazareth PA. Martins come in three sizes, from small to big: 00 (I think they call it Grand Concert), 000 (Auditorium) and D (Dreadnaught). I'm 6'5" but I've never been comfortable playing a full size dreadnaught, so when I found the Auditorium model I fell in love. I love that guitar. It's the only guitar I've wanted to play since I bought it. The neck feels a lot like my G&L ASAT (the G&L version of a Fender Tele) and the tone is great. There's only one thing I changed about the guitar, which was installing a strap button under the heel of the neck so I didn't have to strap it "cowboy style". There are photos here... http://www.martinguitar.com/guitars/choosing/model.php |

I hear Martin, Seagull, and Takamine are all excellent acoustics. I'd like to hear more about this discussion, as I could use a better acoustic (let me chalk it up to "List of things I wish I could afford")

i love my takamine - even though its beat to shit. i got it in '97 and the binding is coming apart, the pickup is on the fritz, lots of dents and scratches, but that guitar somehow fits my hands perfectly. the ONLY guitar that has ever felt 100% right. and i only paid like $600 for it

I was blown away at how loud this Martin I played sounded. It also played really nice and fit my hands well. I'm gonna look around at other Martin's and might be tempted to up my budget for an acoustic.
My dad has a Seagull, but it is broken and I never got to play it because it broke over 5 years ago. Those are made in Canada aren't they?
My dad also has an Ovation from the 70's and it too is broken. I personally have never played an Ovation I've liked the sound of (too thin), but I imagine the older ones might be better.

I liked the neck on the two Ovations I've tried, but I can't get past the sound of that plastic body. "Thin" is definitely the right word for it. |

Aye, Seagull's are made in Quebec. Very rich, full-sounding. Similar to Tak's. |

Thats cool, the S6 is a great guitar! A little brighter I think than the M6.. thats why I chose it over the S6. I had been looking at the Taylor 110 for a while but a friend of mine had an S6 and I played it and loved it. I had never heard of Seagull before but the quality is simply amazing for the money.. But yeah at the store I went with the M6 because I personally liked the tone better.. |

I have one of these: Takamine Jasmine TS99C electro acoustic It is a fairly budget model, but I do love this guitar. It has a beautiful sound plugged or unplugged and it virtually plays itself. It or something similar should be in your price range. This probably isn't very helpful but i just thought i'd have a mini rant on how much I adore my guitar. I don't think the photo does it justice- its way sexier than that. |
