Here's the text, click on the link for the pretty picture of FB&TH and Kurt:
Black looks back for comeback Former Pixies singer Frank Black has been going back in time for inspiration for his new album Show Me Your Tears. [Picture Caption: Frank Black (centre) says he is happy with his "cultish niche"]
The album is the latest release from Frank Black and the Catholics, the group Black formed after he disbanded the influential Pixies in the early 1990s.
Black said that among other things, the standout song from Show Me Your Tears, Nadine, was influenced by Ray Davies of the Kinks.
"I listen to a lot of old stuff rather than new stuff - actually I don't think I listen to any new stuff," Black told BBC World Service's The Music Biz programme.
"The past is where it's at as far as I'm concerned."
'Cultish niche'
There have been many recent rumours of the Pixies reforming, but Black seemed to suggest that he was cool on the idea.
"I have reaped the benefit - I have money and things like that - so I can't really complain that I don't have a bigger pile of money," he said.
"If you're a musician you're going to be a musician - whatever that brings is what you have to accept.
"People who are caught up with achieving certain financial benchmarks tend to make mediocre records."
He added that he was satisfied with his current projects. [Picture caption: Nirvana were just of the bands influenced by the Pixies]
"I'm happy with my cultish niche - it doesn't feel like I'm on top of the world or anything," Black said.
"They guy who dry-cleans my suits, he didn't understand all the salt stains on the suits. He said, 'your suits have been wet.' I said, 'well I play in a band.' He said, 'oh champagne' - imagining that we were pouring bottles of champagne over our heads every night.
"I thought it was sweet that that was what he thought it was like."
At various times The Pixies have been credited with inventing grunge.
Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain once claimed that in making Smells Like Teen Spirit, the record that regularly tops polls as the greatest single of all time, he was "basically ripping off the Pixies."
The group split in early 1993 - after Black had begun working on his solo project. He admitted he had been trying to split the Pixies up much earlier.
"I suppose that temptation kept them alive for as long as it did - which was only about five or six years, but I think I had more than once attempted to disband the group," he said.
"'Please no, please Black, please don't break the band up' - 'alright, we'll continue for a bit more'." |
