I finally bought a bass again for recording(being broke is fun), and im trying to get that real treble sounding clean sound that kim gets, any suggestions on amp settings, or strings or whatever, aside from a specific type of bass? I'd appreciate it. She does really basic stuff but her sound cuts through the mix so well.

There is already a post on franks tone but this is a bit different so hopefully its not a big deal. :)

I think most of that crisp sound comes from the specific type of bass she uses, which I believe is a musicman.

Mostly the bass sound comes from the guitar, since typically the direct sound is used for recordings, but using new strings will make it sound much brighter. Actually her bass sound on the albums sounds more like a fender to me, so she may not have used the Musicman for recording.

Try GHS Bass Boomers (Mediums) for a really bright punchy sound. GHS Boomers should make your bass sound like a musicman for a good couple days.

You know she used a pick, right? World of difference from plucking.

Recording bass can be hard - it's one area where good equipment is probably most needed. Not necessarily expensive, just quality. I heavily rely on direct bass recording, and only sometimes go through the amp. For big rock bass sounds I do both. I guess what I'm saying is a good direct box or preamp with an instrument input can really help, especially with the clean hi-end.

If you're on the cheap, try what I've done - go to those big dumb stores like Guitar Center or Sam Ash and take advantage of them. Buy a really good direct box or preamp, make sure it qualifies for their return policy, take it home and track, track, track, don't scratch it, then return it when you're done. Credit cards are great for this.

If I want to keep the unit, sometimes I'll even return it and then buy one from one of my local independent music stores just to support them. Of course you can check with them first, sometimes they're cool about returns, but if you have no concept of keeping it you should let the big boys deal with their big promises and give the little guy a break!
