start from the beginning i think with the self titled orang album....unless you are more into the smyt stuff then get dog in the sand. |

I say start at the beginning, or just get what's in the store because it's usually not much if anything.

I agree w/brank flack, his first solo album: the orange self-titled album, then definitely Teenager of the Year.

I'd suggest, only because it's the one that got me hooked on FB, Teenager of the Year... it's a behemoth, to be sure.. 22 tracks? But one listen to Headache or Calistan or Speedy Marie should hook you. Then get his first S/T, then work from there. It's an eclectic discography, but worth finding every bit. Plus, I think his first S/T and TOTY can be found in used bins if you're strapped for cash (as I usually am). I'm trying to put together an FB retrospective mix for my car and it's hard to whittle away all the songs I love onto one 80 minute CD-R.

Tempus Fugit, I'm doing something similar, and I had to opt for the double-album CD-R. There was no way, with the amount of work Frank Black has, that I could fit everything I wanted on one CD. Sadly enough, I don't even have all of his albums!!! I don't have Oddballs, Pistolero, or Dog in the Sand. If I had those, it would probably have to be the length of one of those collections from TimeLife Books.

Start with the first FB album, then get them in chronological order.

I suggest Dog in the Sand for sure. Its just as good as smyt, and its my personal favorite fb+tc album along with Devil's Workshop. Regarding ppl telling you to go with the early fb stuff, just remember that the first few solo fb lps dont really sound like the newer material with the catholics. Dont get me wrong, Teenager of the Year is a masterpeice imo, but dont just go buy it thinking it will sound like smyt b/c it wont! |

If SMYT is your first exposure to Frank Black and you like that sound, then you probably want to work backwards. Pick up Black Letter Days next (you really do have to acquire Devil's Workshop as well) and go from there. You will see a steady progression to more of a rocking sound.

I would have to say get Dog in the Sand that was the second Frank Black album i got and i am hooked on it. The first CD was smyt, and if you have a friend that has every album that Frank Black seems to have been on like I do just borrow them find what you like and then go shopping. My next cd to buy is Teenager of the Year and the self titled debut |

work backwards: black letter days, devils' workshop, dog in the sand, pistolero, frank black and the catholics, cult of ray, teenager of the year and then 'Frank Black'. this is a verified form of time fluctuation and allows for a regressive perspective which is essential to the fungk schway of da fwank bwak.

Avoid Devil and Cult for a start, First is also lightweight...only two superb songs on each... |

what would be interesting is to go get 'surfer rosa' by the pixies (if you haven't for some reason heard them), then you can hear a real difference in sound from the same person.

No, it's true. Avoid Devil's Workshop and Cult of Ray. Particularly avoid Cult of Ray. For a first, get Teenager of the Year, Dog in the Sand or SMYT. None of his albums are shit though (except Cult, natch).

but you've already got SMYT, so don't bother getting it again, unless you want a second copy for the kitchen or something.
although it would make an excellent present for somebody with good taste in music

Cult is an awesome album! Fuck that shit. It might be a little more offbeat then any other offering he has put out, but to call it shit is just completely, utterly, retardedly deranged. There are some damn good songs on it and it is a must-have in my opinion. It has an energy and exuberance that you won't find on SMYT, Black Letter Days, or even Devils Workshop and DITS. There might be things you don't like about it, but for chrissake IT'S NOT SHIT!!!

Cult -is- great to me. I Don't Want to Hurt You..., The Adventure and the Resolution, Jesus Was Right, that tissue-ripping intro to Marsist, Last Stand - these tracks alone put it on the pedestal of great Franknicity

cult was the album that got me really into the man! from the start up pop of dance war and men in black, to the soft creature crawling, last stand and i don't wanna hurt you, to the crazy marsist and punk rock city. and don't forget kicked in the taco, you ain't me and jesus was right(which is hated by some folks fer some reason... and cult of ray of course!!! aargh, they should all be mentioned!

Cult is a great cd. Kicked in the Taco is one of my all-time favorites. The guitar work on the title track and the line "I saw raymond speak one time, he said, hello" are priceless. I've had that guitar riff stuck in my head for weeks. |

Yeah make this kid buy Cult of Ray....then he'll never buy another Frank Black CD again and will probably spit on anyone who mentions his name.
Except for Marsist and Men In Black, Cult of Ray is an execrable, tired, tawdry pisstake of an album. By Frank Black standards anyway. Offbeat? OFFBEAT???? Is that latin for SHITE?
Tell you what, I'll go listen to it again (for the first fuckin time since '97, see what you people have got me going through) and if I still think it's shite, I'll post an irrritatingly self congratulatory message here. If it's good on the other hand, I'll assume a new identity on this board and start a thread about how much I hate people who slag it.

Sorry, I missed the point of the original post, if SMYT is the first one you bought, I'd pick up Dog in the Sand, Black Letter Days or Teenager of the Year. Hell, buy them all, you won't go wrong with any of Frank's releases. |
