I don't think the trend is limited to America.
People worldwide have horrible taste in music. They don't really think about it and just blindly digest what's thrown at them by big labels with lots of marketing power.
This is nothing new though.

I think it would be fair to say that Europe is a more "culturally evolved" region on the whole, or perhaps just slightly less dominated by mass marketable gimicks, which is evident in the things like indie film, art, music being more popular there than in the USA (and here)...though I doubt it's ultimately THAT much better there, just a little.

Yeah, I checked that site out and it's funny only because it's so ridiculously stupid. Which, I assume, is the point. The guy can't be serious. Or maybe he is and is taking a break from his medication?

Regarding Time Cube:
The guy, Gene Ray, is completely serious.
I thought it was a joke at first, but it isnt. You can look at him on a cable TV channel explaining things, and also read more things about Time Cube here:

He actaully held a debate on it at MIT, which the authorities tried desperately to stop. There are several accounts online if you look around. It's all quite hilarious.
Ironically enough, under all the endless ranting and abuse and crazy talk, the foundation of the Time Cube makes a lot of sense, and is a bit like what Metric time might be like if it were ever introduced.
A few friends of mine are making t-shirts with quotes from that website so we can walk around and confuse the hell out of people.

My god, that's insane, it would be nice if the guy could spell though. Interesting read, people are loons.
Well, the whole commercial music vs. artistic music things been played to death, but as long as true music fans go out and support their favorite bands by seeing them in concert, and kind of by buying the albums. A whole different rant here but with everything that's happening in record sales due to the internet and etc, hopefully artists will be able to get a better deal financially, though with lowering cd prices they'll probably get screwed over more, but hey the beast that's the world culture now is making it harder for good artists of all types and for that matter people who have unpopular opinions, politics, war blah to be heard and seen and appreciated by the masses who at least a small portion of could love a lot of the more obscure stuff out there...
By the way, does even the most braindead person really sit and listen to a full britney spears, beyonce, justin timberlake cd and love the whole thing beside the one or two catchy songs? Why the hell do people buy full length cds of drivel? 13 million copys, blah, ace of base blah, abba.... I'm going to go order the latest justin timberlake import single with all those lost masterpiece b-sides! Blah... Music with integrity being whats popular, what a concept. |

Doubtless MTV will run a special of somekind extolling the vitures of this "influential cult band", and go on and on about them like they always new they were great, and have supported them since day one. Similar to how Frank's solo work will regarded as masterpiece when's dead and gone. Even today people talk about Orange and TOTY like they're brilliant, when at the time the reviews were mixed at best. Oh well, the greats were never appreciated in their time.

As far as mainstream music mags go, the only one i would actually buy is Maxim Blender. I don't know, it just seems that for every crappy band/artist that they mention or cover, they give props to a good one and they also hold older bands of worth in high regard as well. Plus, its a pretty entertaining read.
A helluva lot better than Kerrang and NME, or Spin and RS. The latter two are as good as asswipe to me.

Spin is a great magazine. They always support indie bands while the other magazines shun them.
Plus Spin is the funniest music magazine out there. It's a magazine with some brainpower compared to rolling stone.
(Just a note, but Where is my Mind?, just came on my XM radio- AUDIO BLISS)
I also agree Blender is funny, but the moby picture os disturbing if you know what i am talking about.

Gosh, wtf ever happened to Raygun magazine? That was an A-1 music mag! Anyone used to read that? That's what I read through college - can't remember the others right now. Also just found one of the best Nick Cave interviews ever in Punk Planet.
Did Britney write that song? I f**king hate it, but obviously, whoever wrote it knows how to craft from the pop music formula. Really, though, I think most of the credit goes to the production team.
That timecube thing? Why is there such a fine line between sheer lunacy and genius? I have heard that the great majority of people who have schizophrenia test at or above the genius level on IQ tests, for what that's worth. This guy might be one of those, he sure has a chip on his shoulder. But it does seem like he's kinda stuck in a rut, doesn't it?
