Anybody else on garageband.com?
I had no idea people were this simple; that most of them don't have a clue as to what I'm doing/trying to do.
It's a revelation.
And I'm fucking drunk. |

My band was on garageband.com and I have to say that most of the people on there just seem to be morons that are into the most generic punk rock and metal but there are a few on there that are actually trying to expand their horizons not just be obnoxious and bash everything except their own band. Try to check out Truesetto on there, they're a band from Salisbury, Maryland that I've had the pleasure of playing shows with about five or six times great guys and great fun music I think their song "Silent Treatment" was ranked number two on all of garageband.com for awhile actually.

I'm trying it out, the whole review policy is crazy. You have to review like 15 pairs of bands songs in order to upload one of your own. I've found a lot of just plain old formulaic hard rock. I'm trying to be objective though. I hope people appreciate honesty. |

I just put the first song from my new band up there last night.
The band is THE ELECTRIC SERVANTS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Check it out and let me know with a review.
(My name in the band is Deacon Blue, we all have pseudonyms, natch)

Is it worthwhile putting tunes on there? I had my stuff on MP3.com, and now they limit it to three songs. So i moved all my songs to this server...never wanna do that shit again...'specially with close to 50 songs. |

Yeah, well garageband really stresses the reviewing aspect. Their catch seems to be.. pay 20 bux or review 15 pairs of songs to upload 1 song. It sort of forces a community because you have so many people reviewing. If I just wanted to post a ton of stuff, I'd go to soundclick.com because they don't seem to have a restriction on how many songs you can post. I have about 30 on there now that have gradually accumulated over the years. They do have a pay version of the site which gives you flash animation and stuff on your pages. There's some pretty cheap promo packages among other things too. |

At Garageband you're guaranteed that people will listen to your music, because the system is based on reviews. That's a good thing and a bad thing; having people of various ignorance rating your music. Not for the faint-hearted. |

hmm..that sounds interesting...but how useful are the reviews, really?
Like, i already have enough musicians listening to my music...i'd like to get some 'regular folks'..does the site take that angle? |

No, not really, it's mainly musicians I think, although there are some "regular users". Most of the "critics" are reviewing songs in order to be eligible to upload their songs or to get their songs reviewed faster (that's how the system works). |

If you want some constructive(hopefully) critisism then it would be useful, I kind of feel like it's mainly a musician thing too. |

The 'forced review' aspect is a good idea, insofar as it forces people to actually give their input on the material that is already on there. This facilitates a much quicker development of some kind of 'community' for the site.
Then again, it's also a drawback since the drive behind writing a review is pretty much self-driven...some people might not really give an honest listen to the stuff on there, and might just sleepwalk through their "reviews" for the sole purpose of uploading a song. The value of such a review is questionable at best....

That's true, I've read a lot of reviews that are like, "Nice tune. Lose the solo." ... Wow what a revalation, thanks. There is a ratings system for the reviewers: "This is one of garageband.com's most frequently asked questions - and "Reviewer Ratings" is our answer. We understand a musician's desire to place a listener's comments in context, but we also respect our reviewers' right to privacy. So "Reviewer Ratings" offer a rough guide to what the last few bands thought of a particular reviewer's comments.
Every time a band gets text comments, the band is asked a series of questions about the review. Did the reviewer demonstrate that he or she properly listened to the song? Does the review offer meaningful praise or constructive criticism? And so on. From the band's answers to these questions we derive a score for each review, and a user's Reviewer Rating is an average of the scores they've gotten for the text reviews that they've written. It's not an exact measure of a reviewer's ability or taste - but it helps bands know if a critical review comes from someone who most other bands think has a fair perspective. You can also check out what the reviewer says about themselves and what they said in other reviews by clicking on their screen name to see their Public Profile." It doesn't correct the probem but I think it probably helps a bit. |

That's a cool system..but i really would rather hear from folks who just wanna listen to music than peeps who're trying to hit a minimum..and i have little interest in being a part of that community at this point. |

Yeah, it's not mixed yet. I was just gauging some reactions as it's completely different from anything I have written or tried to do before.
Yeah, it's a minute long fade, but seriously, that's only 5 minutes. We went asolutely nuts and the whole track is like 9.5 minutes and it gets really NUTS toward the end. It's funny.
Thanks for the kudos.
