The reviewer gives SMYT 3.5 stars out of 4 (no date):
Black's ninth post-Pixies album has a clear narrative thread running throughout the 13 songs that must have been inspired by the emotional fallout of his recent divorce. A resonant, melancholy heart beats in such songs as "Everything Is New" "New House of the Pope," "When Will Happiness Find Me Again?" With titles like "This Old Heartache," even, a village idiot could get the message seething beneath the music.
While heartbreak and woe may compose the dominant motif of "Show Me Your Tears," Black doesn't let it undermine the music's often lively sound.
