Could someone please explain exactly what this process is. I have an idea but Im not sure. Does anyone know how its done exactly, for instance do they all record at once together. How is it recorded? etc etc Any help is appreciated |

my understanding is that they basically just plug all their mics/instruments into a mixing board, get the producer to set the levels and mix down everything live to a 2-track recorder... probably 1/4" tape, right? or is that too simplistic?

2 track means that it is a Stereo 1/4 inch tape. A left track and a right track. two tracks. You mix it all in a big mixer, and then send the signals left or right, and the tape records in stereo on two tracks. live to two track. yeah...

it's unlikely that they're using 1/4" tape. too lo-fi. probably something fatter - you can record 2-track on 1/2" or 1" tape by just using half the tape for yer left channel and half for right.

They probably use a 90 minute normal bias maxell tape. And if they have enough money they can go for the high bias.
and that's my joke for today.

didn't fb suggest when explaining his use of 2-track that one day he might just release sheet music?

Don't tell me I'm the only one here in this forum using a 12,000 square foot 60s era supercomputer to power my connection to the internet. The TI-85 was simple to use, but still not smart enough. I had tried an abacus but was unpleasantly surprised at its limitations. And since the farming accident, I can only count to seven unless I'm barefoot.

Oh my God, d3, you beat me to it! Yes, he did say that once. Something like "Yeah, we'll just keep going back farther and farther with technology, and eventually we'll just release sheet music." Frank, you are too funny!

"DOG was recorded live to 2 track, as has become our artistic commitment, although it has no razor blade edits, unlike FRANK BLACK AND THE CATHOLICS, which has two edits, and PISTOLERO which has one edit. I was very insistent about no editing on DOG. I foresee a time when we will record to wax cylinder, or perhaps a release only on sheet music. Further and further back in time."
