Hello all.. I'm new here, so I just thought I'd wave my arms around and say "hi" to everyone. I'm glad to see there's still so many people into Mr. Black.. I thought I was one of the few ones left!!

Just picked up the new album today, which inspired me to search out for a website, and here I am. I'm enjoying SMYT quite a bit, especially Manitoba and New House Of The Pope.

As for the basic info: I'm 24 and a Maryland resident. I've been into Frank since I first heard "Headache" on the radio (!!) oh so many years ago. I picked up Teenager and the rest is history. What's weird is I had never heard of the Pixies at that point.. well, damn if I didn't have to then go and pick up the entire back catalog. Worth every penny, though.

I might as well go ahead and indulge the newbie cliche of listing my favorite albums

Teenager Of The Year (natch)
Pistolero - underrated, in my opinion. Western Star is hands down one of his best songs ever.
Dog In The Sand
S/T (the first one) - When I was 16, I went to Spain for a week. One of the few cassettes I had to listen to on the trip was a schizophrenic mixtape with 6 songs from this album. Adda Lee, Don't Ya Rile Em and Fu Manchu all bring back vivid memories of being in a bus and watching the Spanish landscapes whoosh by.

Basically, even if I don't particularly like a FB album (cough, Cult Of Ray, cough), there's always just enough songs to warrant owning it. Screw Will Smith, Frank should have had the theme to MIB.

Ok, this is getting a little longwinded - even for me. I'll save my ramblings for a later date.

'Ello all!

I have the heart of a child. I keep it in a jar on my shelf.

Hate to disappoint you Tempus, but that wasn't your typical newbie post. The following errors were made:

1) Substantial content
2) Correct location in the forum
3) More FB content than Pixies.

Good work! Way to shatter the steretype. And welcome aboard.

Heh... no, but usually they open with a lot more about the Pixies, I think that they think it lends cred or something since the Pixies are old school and this is FB.Net not Pixies.net. Speaking of which, I have a URL to squat on...

Where did you live in Maryland, Derek? I lived in Overlea until I was 10 (when we moved to L.A.). I still go back occasionally to visit my relatives, who are scattered all around Baltimore.

Thanks, everyone, for the welcome. It's nice to know I didn't screw up on my first post... but the night is young!

I live near Annapolis, although I have lived in Baltimore, before. I really need to move back up there, as I've realized there ain't squat to do around this area.

Whoop! Got to go to work.. at least I have the new album to get me through the day. It's growing on me more and more with each listen...

I lived in various suburbs of Baltimore.

Timonium, Lutherville, and Perry Hall. Perry Hall is probably the closest to Overlea, right? Take 695 East from Perry Hall and I think that takes you to Overlea. Or maybe it's 695 West. Can't remember.

i lived in Baltimore for 4 months this year for work.

good things about Baltimore: Brewer's Art (excellent beer selection and great food), Ottobar (cool place to hang out and/or see a show), Kawasaki Cafe (excellent sushi place, the one on Charles St.), The Charles Theatre (the only cool movie theatre in Baltimore), Free Bookstore (on 27th and Charles.. every saturday they give away free books. as many as you want), One World Cafe (great place to either: have a drink, eat or just have coffee and chill out. a coffee shop that serves beer and liquor. what a novel idea).

bad things about Baltimore: the weather (was invariably bad when i was there), lack of good looking girls (call me crazy, but i really felt like it was slim pickin's there. it's the only city i've been in where i could drive all the way through downtown and not see ONE cute girl. sorry Baltimore), the scary ass dangerous neighborhoods (unfortunately Baltimore has some pretty severe bad spots. a co-worker and i were a block away from a big shooting when it happened. people running down the street, cars backing up to get away. fun stuff), lack of mexican food (it's not their fault, but certain thigns in life i can't live without)..

i kind of hated it at first, but in the end Baltimore grew on me. just thought i'd give my 2 cents on Baltimore since i feel like i know it pretty well..

Did you go to the Senator? that's another cool theater that's in Baltimore.

As for Mexican food, there is this awesome mexican restaurant El Salto. It's near Parkville, sorta near the city.

Yeah, the weather is totally nuts in Baltimore. In the summer it get's very hot and humid, yet in the winter there can be major blizzards. Last winter I think it snowed about 3 feet within a few days. But then some winters the maximum snow fall might be 2-3 inches.

I sort of liked that randomness about Baltimore.

Doesn't Baltimore have one of the top 5 highest crime ratings in the US?

yeah, i think Baltie is #3 right now. it used to be 2 or 1.

my friend who lives there said that the city tagline used to be "Baltimore: The City That Reads".. which they had on all the bus benches and stuff. and the joke used to be "Baltimore: The City That Bleeds".. did you ever say that Derek?

now on the bus benches it says "Baltimore: The Greatest City On Earth" or something like that.. which is a tad hyperbolic i think...

yeah, i got there literally right after that whole storm. it was quite an adjustment for me. but it was kind of fun actually.

i never went to El Salto, but it sounds like it might be too heavy on the salt for me (heh heh, hehehehehheh)..

DID go to The Senator (forgot about that one).. cool theatre. saw Matrix Reloaded there. i guess John Waters does all his premeres there..

Floop - the Brewer's Art, Ottobar and Charles Theater were all frequent hang outs of mine when I lived near 28th St. As for the Mex food, Holy Frijoles, while having the most ridiculously small seating ever, made some damn good food and was fairly inexpensive to boot. Good times.. I miss that place.
I was also there for the Blizzard.. no real complaints aside from the fact that securing a parking space meant you had to practically bludgeon people to death with your snow shovel. I don't think I've ever seen people so possessive over a 7' piece of road.
And no worries over the hijack.. I haven't been posting like I should, so this gives me more incentive, hehe..

i lived on Calvert between 29th and 30th.. pretty close.

i had a major crush on the Korean girl who worked at that laundrymat..

as for Holy Frijoles, i've actually been there. wasn't too wowed. and frankly, any Mexican place where you have to pay for chips and salsa is already losing big points.. you should never have to PAY for chips..

El Salto = free chips and salsa on your table.

If you go during lunch hours (11:00-2:30), they have good specials. Like a burrito, taco, spanish rice (plus the chips/salsa of course) for $4.75. And it's not too salt[o]y.

I wanted to see the Matrix Reloaded at the Senator when I was up in Baltimore, but I was visiting my girlfriend and she'd already seen it twice.

The City the Bleeds, heh, nope, I never mentioned that.
