I went to the local HMV this morning when it opened....a line up of people outside the door...however, they were all waiting to get the KISS DVD. So I get in the store and its not there. So I go to the guy at the counter and after about 5 minutes explaining what Frank Black and The Catholics is, he searchs and finds they do not have any on order. I make a quick speech about how HMV should hire people who 'have a clue' rather than kids who look like they come out of a bad Gen-X tv car commercial....and leave. I then go to Archambault; not there, never heard of it. Then, Future Shop; they do have the Frank Black 'Show me Your Tears' DVD...and it should be there on friday....huh? I'm at a loss and go into Musicworld (among the lamest record-store franchises in eastern Canada)....and they have it, in the PUNK section....and for $14.99. So if any of you are from Montreal, good luck finding it. |

I will be heading to Broadway to check if our local cool record shop has it yet. If I know them, it'll be a week or two late.

I went into Virgin (Megastores) and they don't have have a Frank Black section.
HMV had it though, right at the front too but with a bunch of other new releases. |

FBF, you're telling me there are no good indie stores in Montreal? Come on, you'll have to look harder than that. How is it possible that Saskatoon has two solid inide stores and Montreal, which is aprox. 8 times larger, has none?
And Dean, Stu doesn't have SMYT yet. He said he'll call me when he gets it. Probably next week sometime. |

Looked at Best Buy in Asheville, NC... looked in the FB section, they didn't have it.
If I get a job there I'll make sure those bastards order new Frank Black albums. I didn't feel like asking someone if maybe they hadn't put it out on the shelves yet. I'll just buy it later.

Don't you guys have small, independent, cool record stores? Best Buy? HMV? Virgin? Ugh. I understand if it's the only choice or if you're dead broke (but if you have enough disposable income to buy a CD you can PROBABLY afford the extra $2 to support someone local) and it's cheaper.

Crazy, but then again, I know nothing of Sunderland, it's size, etc. That's also a viable excuse - not having a store :)

Montreal used to have a world class indy shop...but it closed down for unknown reasons...you used to be able to get all of Frank's CD's all available imports there....there are good indy shops here, but, the focus is 'experimental' ... Yo La Tango, etc... indy shops sometimes reflect the tastes of their owners, and none in Montreal really have the taste for Frank Black. Basically we lost all the great stores within five years....and HMV, Musicworld basically took over....box-store, stocking shelves mentality rather than musically inclined people...... |

Yikes!! Theres tonnes o places in Montreal to get cool music, even on St Laurent. Dont know the names 'cause I'm not from there, but I've seen em. There's spots near McGill as well.
Anyway, I happened the be at the HMV at Sherway Gardens in Etobicoke (Toronto) of all places, and they had near 10 copies $19.99 on the way to the shelf as I walked in. I had to ask for it and the two people on staff at the time knew what I was talking about before I finished the sentence. *shrug* Who knows, eh? |

I'm sorry that some of you had problems finding SMYT today. It is out of our control with most chain stores if they carry the disc or not. We did ship out all advanced orders to stores in time so that they would be stocked this morning, but since many of the Canadian chains buy at a head office level and not individually, they will often place albums in select stores and not in all of them. We also have very little control over pricing, although I don't believe you will see the record over $19.99 in Canada. Price range should be $15.99 to $18.99, HMV will probably be higher.
If you cannot find the record in your town and you are living in Canada, please email me at work at jerks@sonicunyon.com and I will look up local stores in your area where the album has shipped or I can help you find an alternate way to purchase the album at a reasonable price. And for the love of music, please support your local independent retailers whenever possible!

I'll drink to that, sean. I happily paid my $13.99 at my new favorite indie music store. While it's tempting to pay the low prices available at your Circuit Citys and Best Buys, your money actually means something at these indie stores.

For the record:
I went to SONIC UNYON headquarters in Hamilton, Ontario today (Cdn distributors of Frank).
First things first, I checked the front stands for any sign of their main money makers' new release.. no sign. Check the Frank section. No dice. Check the Sonic Unyon section - again, snake eyes. Finally, I ask the dude at the counter: "Where you hiding the new Frank album?". To which he responds, "huh?". Quickly, I say "Frank Black - new album 'show me your tears'. I think it comes out today". He agrees with me and then quickly ignores the phone to go grab a small pile of Frank cds from upstairs, handing me one, and charging me a reasonable 14.95+tax.
Happy ending. Too bad Unyon didn't even have their own store organized, let alone Canadian outlets (big and small). Love the label, but they seemed to drop the ball today.

Went through the pain of trying unsucessfully to obtain SMYT on my 10 Am smoke and Horton's break. Went to HMV and there were no copies which was a surprise cause when I tried to smooth talk myself into a copy the day previously the dude was like "we can't do that but it will be out tomorrow morning".
After going back on the release date, I wasn't that shocked at not getting a copy since the store was in the financial district. I suppose the HMV mother computer spat out some info about there not being enough of a demographic at Bay/King and wound up ordering a heap of Canadian Idol contestant tapes and a motivational tape/DVD combo on how to unleash your inner third world exploiter.
At lunch I finally able to find it a Sunrise for 16.99 which was resonable.
Cruised back to the office happy with my purchase and had a good Tuesday afternoon. |
