I've been listening to the two live albums available from Hearitagain.net (excellent quality, excellent sets), and I can't help noticing a couple of things.
1. Frank is mighty bored of Pixies songs
2. Frank is might proud of SMYT songs
I remember the first time I heard "Where is my mind" live (never having had the pleasure of hearing the Pixies live) and actually feeling the hairs prick on the back of my neck when the "ooh hoo"s started. I expected a similarly delicious morsels from the new live shows, but it's just not there. Maybe its just because I'm not actually there but, they just seem flat, lifeless, noodly and utterly lacking in passion a bile....
And then there's the new stuff, Manitoba , Massif Centrale, Nadine, New House of the Pope; all played with gusto and energy that lifts them above all the other songs in the set...
Maybe its just me, and I never thought I'd say it with any real conviction but I think I finally prefer Frank Black to the Pixies...

possibly, but I think he still loves Gouge Away, as all of the live versions i've heard by FB&Tcs have rocked ! I mean, the Live version on Nadine cd single is absolutely brilliant with the keyboards

Think I agree on Gouge Away, get the sense that Mr Grieves, Where is My Mind and (gasp) Wave of Mutilation are just banged through

does frank have like around 10 pixies songs he could possibly play live, or does he randomly pick a few? |

What do you mean, PixieSteve? He has the whole catalog to choose from since he wrote every song. But, do you mean are there around 10 songs that he regularly plays?
Sorry, not trying to be bitchy, I'm just confused. |

I'd really like to get a copy of that single since I was at the show, but we don't seem to have it around here. Was it available for online order or anything? I don't remember anymore. Does someone have a store nearby selling them?

yeah sorry, it's just that i think i read somewhere that he has sort of narrowed all his pixies songs into an elite bunch, which he still plays. i was was wondering if that's so, or if he plays any of his whole collection of pixies songs.
if it's just a few that he usually plays, which ones are they? i've heard of gouge away a lot, and in this thread where is my mind?, mr. grieves and wave of mutilaton. any others? |

Nah, just a few. Think they're posted somewhere, but if not:
Full-band currently: Gouge Away Monkey Gone To Heaven Where Is My Mind Mr. Grieves Cactus Crackity Jones Holiday Song (less often now, but I think he played it here in S'toon)
Solo Velouria Wave of Mutilation Into The White Caribou
Not inclusive, but off the top of my head that's what I've got.

He played Holiday Song, Cactus, Monkey, Nimrods Son, Where is my Mind, and Wave of Mutilation when I saw him solo in May. |

i imagine if he were bored of the songs he wouldn't play them. as for the "ooh hoo"s the reason they are lacking on the recordings is because no one in the band does them....it was/is always the audienece that starts doing them. |

As this is my favorite Pixies song, I'd kill for a live Frank Black (solo or with the Catholics) MP3 of it; but it's not available via any of the FTP shows. Does anyone have a copy they'd be willing to point me to, or e-mail to me?

I don't especially wait for him to play Pixies songs...I'd rather him play FB&TC songs. But I do not regret ever seeing "Holiday Song," "Cactus," "Crackity Jones" and especially "Gouge Away" live.

He did almost the entire backcatalog on "The Dream is Over", live solo just after the Pixies split up - quite rare now though
Live at Slims - from HearItAgain.net has the most Pixies songs of any set I've seen, or seen listed (but then it is a really long set) - Where is my Mind, Wave of Mutilation, Gouge Away, Mr Grieves, Holiday Song, Nimrods Son, Cactus, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Crackity Jones.
Another thing - Frank originally covered Hang on to Your Ego with the Pixies - so do that count as a Pixies song??

Can you imagine Bird Dream of The Olympus Mons done by FB&TCs - (preferably with Eric on the organ of course) - that would be truly a site to see

The Dream is Over was recorded before Trompe was released, and does not feature any Trompe songs. |

I did find a solo version of Planet of Sound once, which was weird as I didn't think he did any solo shows around 'Trompe' time.

Gouge Away has become a Catholics song in its Nadine EP incarnation, that EP seems to indicate what live songs Frank enjoys (and thus plays better than others) ... I only wish it had the slow part of Los Angeles, but then I guess there's no real way to express Rich Gilbert's way of "handling" the song's change without being there. ;-)

I have an acoustic show from 1991 (actually not a solo show, it's Frank and Joey) where they play Head On.

Last time I saw him he started his set with six Pixies songs, and it looked to me like he enjoyed playing every one of them.
It was a neat moment when "Where is my Mind" started before the curtain even came up. Everybody in the place was like, "Holy shit!"
